Indian Army’s Cheetal helicopters keep flying in Ladakh amid failure probe

The Indian Army’s Cheetal helicopters continue to fly regular mountain sorties in the Ladakh sector, including the Siachen glacier, even as investigators examine a suspected technical failure that caused a recent crash, officials aware of the development said on Wednesday. The Leh-based HQs 14 Corps, responsible for operations in the sector, operates around 25 Cheetals—a re-engined version of the workhorse Cheetah helicopter. (Facebook/Indian Air Force’s post) The investigation has zeroed in on a material failure in the transmission system of the single-engine helicopter that crashed near Leh’s Tangtse area on May 20, the officials said, asking not to be named. “The probe will identify which component in the transmission system failed after which corrective steps will be taken,” said one of the officials. IAF Mi-17V5 helicopters drop 12,000 litres of water to fight massive forest fire in Arunachal’s Lohit Valley: WATCH | Trending News

3 min readNew DelhiJan 31, 2026 06:26 PM IST A massive forest fire in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit Valley has triggered an aerial firefighting operation by the Indian Air Force (IAF), with Mi-17V5 helicopters deployed to douse flames in difficult, high-altitude terrain. The mission comes just weeks after a similar wildfire operation in the Khonoma-Dzukou Valley in neighbouring Nagaland. The firefighting sorties were carried out at an altitude of around 9,500 feet, where thin air and rugged geography make flying far more challenging than operations in the plains. According to the IAF, helicopters released nearly 12,000 litres of water over fire-hit zones. The aircraft flew over narrow ridgelines above the Lohit River, areas largely inaccessible to ground crews due to steep slopes and thick forest cover. As reported by CNBC, the aerial intervention was launched after the Arunachal Pradesh government sought assistance, with local forest and disaster response teams facing difficulties reaching the blaze on foot. Movement on the ground was slowed by sharp ridges and dense vegetation. Army units stationed in the eastern sector also …

‘We know you are acquiring helicopters, keep Rs 5 crore ready’: Pune businessman gets death threats from Pak numbers; cops suspect spoofing | Pune News

The Pune police Wednesday launched a probe after a city-based aviation businessman received death threats and a ransom demand of Rs 5 crore over voice notes from Pakistan phone numbers. Initial investigation by the Crim Branch suggests that the suspects from India may have used caller ID spoofing to display Pakistan numbers to mislead the complainant. A First Information Report (FIR) in the case was registered at the Koregaon Park police station based on the complaint of the 37-year-old businessman who owns a firm in Pune that facilitates the chartering of helicopters and private aircraft. The case was filed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions pertaining to extortion and criminal intimidation. A few days ago, the complainant received WhatsApp messages from a phone number with the Pakistan country code of +92. The voice note in a man’s voice allegedly said that the sender knew the complainant’s name and his company. Another voice note received in the same voice minutes later reportedly said, “We know you are acquiring helicopters. You will have to pay us protection …

Prolonged grounding of the Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) calls for tough decisions – here’s why | Explained News

Prolonged grounding of the Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) calls for tough decisions – here’s why | Explained News

The military’s entire fleet of Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) will not fly for another three months, it is reported. The ALHs were grounded in January after an Indian Coast Guard chopper crashed in Porbandar during a training sortie, killing all three persons on board. In September 2024, another Coast Guard ALH Mark-III had crashed during a medical evacuation mission off the Porbandar coast, claiming another three lives. Why are there repeated concerns over this indigenous military helicopter? A prominent red flag in the operational exploitation of any flying machine is an “aircraft on ground” (AOG) event. It denotes the grounding of the aircraft due to non-availability of an essential spare or rotable and will demand the highest priority at every level to liquidate. Repeated AOG occurrences and/ or inordinate delay in liquidating AOG can be indicative of a poorly developed op-logistic chain, flawed contract, or a product that is yet to mature.
