Hemant Soren Withdraws Bail Petition After Supreme Court Rap

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren (File). New Delhi: Ex-Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren – arrested in January in a money laundering case – has withdrawn an interim bail plea filed before the Supreme Court after questions over non-disclosure of facts, specifically that a Ranchi special court had taken cognisance of the complaint against him. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mr Soren, withdrew the application after an irate court warned it would otherwise dismiss the plea. This means the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader, who is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc, will not be able to campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Voting for Jharkhand’s 14 seats was spread across four phases. Polling for seven has been completed, with the rest to vote across the sixth and seventh (final) phases – on May 25 and June 1. What Supreme Court Said To Kapil Sibal Today In today’s hearing the court – which asked several tough questions of Mr Sibal – also junked a petition challenging Hemant Soren’s arrest; the JMM leader was arrested …

Champai Soren To Take Oath As Jharkhand Chief Minister Today

Champai Soren will take oath as Jharkhand Chief Minister on February 2 New Delhi: Champai Soren, veteran leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, will take oath today as the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The 67-year-old was invited by the Governor to take oath late this evening — more than 24 hours after the arrest of his predecessor Hemant Soren in an alleged money laundering case. The Governor CP Radhakrishnan’s move came hours after Champai Soren met him earlier on Thursday, pleading that he be called to take oath. “There is no government for 18 hours. There is a situation of confusion. Being the constitutional head, we expect you will soon take steps for the formation of a popular government,” read his letter to the Governor. The delay in the Governor’s decision — coupled with the slim margin in numbers — pushed the ruling alliance to move their MLAs, fearing an Operation Lotus by the opposition BJP. But the weather played spoilsport. The plane — bound for Congress-ruled Telangana — could not take off and …

Hemant Soren was arrested on January 31 by the Enforcement Directorate (File) New Delhi: A special bench of three Supreme Court judges will hear arrested Jharkhand leader Hemant Soren’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. The special bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice MM Sundaresh, and Justice Bela Trivedi will hear tomorrow the petition which requests Mr Soren’s immediate release. Hemant Soren, the beleaguered Chief Minister of Jharkhand, accused the ED of arresting him as part of a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” by the Centre ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Mr Soren had to resign his post over the agency’s actions against him. Mr Soren has urged the top court in his plea to declare his arrest unwarranted, arbitrary, and in violation of his fundamental rights, reported news agency PTI. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was arrested yesterday in a money laundering case linked to the “illegal” possession of huge parcels of land and his alleged association with the “land mafia”. The arrest has curtailed Mr Soren’s liberty and ED officers have abused their …

Smiling, Waving Hemant Soren, Arrested Last Night, Produced In Court

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren – arrested late Wednesday night by the Enforcement Directorate on money laundering charges – has been sent to judicial custody for one day, with a definitive ruling on the central agency’s request for 10-day custody expected Friday afternoon.  The Ranchi special court before which Mr Soren – whom the agency claims was directly involved in the alleged Rs 600 crore land scam – was presented this morning delayed passing its final order, because the Supreme Court has taken cognisance of a petition by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader. Hours before he was produced in the special court, Mr Soren had moved the Supreme Court to challenge his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. In his petition, he said the agency had “abused its power and acted in a malafide manner to destabilise a democratically-elected state government”. He also called his arrest “illegal and without jurisdiction”; Mr Soren has already filed one case against senior officers of the probe agency under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes …

Kiren Rijiju Attacks Hemant Soren For ‘Looting Money’

New Delhi: In a sharp response to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju called him a “spolied child” and said if Hemant Soren hails from a tribal community, this does not give him a licence to loot public money. “I am a tribal from a more backward area. I find your comment funny. If Shibu Soren ji says this dialogue, then I can accept it, but this dialogue does not suit a spoiled son. Anyway, tribals do not have the licence to loot public money,” wrote Rijiju in a post on ‘X’. His comment came in response to Hemant Soren’s post on X, saying that he was not afraid and would not accept defeat. “It’s a break, life is a great battle. I have fought every moment, and I will fight every moment. But I will not beg for compromise. Either in defeat or in victory, I am not afraid. I will not give up in vain. I will not accept defeat,” Soren wrote on X. Hours after handing over …

Mallikarjun Kharge After Probe Agency Arrests Hemant Soren

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday said “forcing” Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to resign after putting the Enforcement Directorate against him is “a blow to federalism”. Soren resigned as chief minister Wednesday evening after over seven hours of questioning by the ED on money laundering charges linked to alleged land fraud. Thereafter, he was arrested by the agency. In a post in Hindi on X, Congress chief Kharge said, “The one who did not go with (Narendra) Modi ji will go to jail. Putting ED against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and forcing him to resign is a blow to federalism.” Intimidating opposition leaders by making the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) draconian is part of the BJP’s toolkit, he alleged.
