Image used for representational purposes only The Madras High Court has ordered that the State authorities should not grant permission for the felling or removal of rosewood trees on private lands until a writ petition challenging the repeal of the Tamil Nadu Rosewood Trees (Conservation) Act, 1994, and the Tamil Nadu Rosewood Trees (Conservation) Rules, 1995, is disposed of. In an order dated August 14, 2026, Justice N. Sathish Kumar and Justice K. Rajasekar said the reasons for recommending the repeal of the Tamil Nadu Rosewood Trees (Conservation) Act, 1994, defied logic, as the original Act itself indicated that rosewood was a rare species endemic to southern India and almost impossible to regenerate except by natural growth. Uproar took place on Monday (August 24, 2026) after Devipatan Divisional Commissioner Durga Shakti Nagpal allegedly attempted to influence a Civil Judge (Senior Division), Shabina Khan, in Gonda. She is handling a civil suit, with social activists demanding a high-level investigation by the State government, and the Allahabad High Court referred the conduct to the court dealing with criminal contempt matters on August 21.  In the matter, the Civil Judge, Gonda, in a letter to the District Judge, said she received repeated calls while on leave on July 15, 2026 from a number linked to the Commissioner’s office. Later, she said she got a call from Commissioner Durga Shakti Nagpal, who wanted to discuss the pending suit and asked pointed questions about how long she intended to stay on leave. Stalin has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court, seeking 100% counting of VVPAT slips of the Kolathur Assembly constituency, and consequently to declare him as the returned candidate after nullifying the election of TVK MLA V.S. Though Article 329(b) of the Constitution states that no election to Parliament or a State legislature could be called into question except by way of an election petition, the petitioner said his writ petition would be maintainable since he was only challenging the post-result administrative/technical process of EVM/VVPAT checking and verification. The Calcutta High Court on Monday stayed an arrest warrant issued against TMC MP Mahua Moitra by a Krishnanagar court for failing to appear before it. The bench stayed the arrest warrant against Moitra till further orders. The Madras high court on Monday extended the stay on five Tamil Nadu assembly seats that were supposed to go to bypolls, including a seat that was won by chief minister C Jopseph Vijay. The ECI’s submission that it has no plan to announce the bypolls till the election cases are over was opposed by the Tamil Nadu government headed by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay (PTI File) According to news agency ANI, the Election Commission of India informed the high court that it will not notify bypolls for five Assembly constituencies until pending election petitions are decided. The court has extended the interim stay on notifying the bypolls till September 8. It rejected the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government’s plea to vacate the stay. The five constituencies are Tiruchy East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram and Karur. CM Vijay had won the Trichy East seat, one of the two seats he won, along with Perambur. There was also a complete absence of supervisory review of the pending probe. The victim, Jitendra Kumar, 24, a resident of Bharatpur’s Bayana block, moved the High Court seeking a fair investigation, completion of the probe and filing of a chargesheet in the case. The first information report (FIR) was registered on May 10, 2024, following an attack on Mr. Kumar and his family members. The “politically influential” people who allegedly attacked the Dalit family in Kair village in a bid to encroach upon its agricultural land also registered an FIR against the victims. The Lucknow Bench of the court said on Friday (August 21, 2026) that land can be purchased through a sale deed only when the owner voluntarily agrees to sell and both sides mutually agree on the sale price; if no such consent is forthcoming, the State government will have to follow the statutory land acquisition procedure. With this, the court directed the authorities not to harass the petitioners or forcibly obtain their consent for executing sale deeds.
