SC hikes wife`s maintenance, rules EMIs cannot override duty to maintain spouse

SC hikes wife`s maintenance, rules EMIs cannot override duty to maintain spouse

The Supreme Court has enhanced the monthly maintenance payable to a woman from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, holding that a husband’s financial commitments, such as loan repayments for asset creation, cannot take precedence over his statutory obligation to maintain his spouse.  A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and AG Masih passed the order while allowing an appeal filed by Deepa Joshi against her estranged husband, Gaurav Joshi, challenging the adequacy of maintenance fixed by courts below. The apex court modified a June 26, 2025, order of the Uttarakhand High Court, which had earlier enhanced the maintenance from Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. In its order, the Justice Karol-led Bench noted that the husband, employed as a Manager with Canara Bank, was drawing a gross monthly income of Rs 1,15,670 and had a regular source of earnings. It also recorded that the wife has no independent source of income and has been living separately shortly after the marriage. “Repayments of loans, particularly where such repayments result in creation or acquisition of assets, partake …

Yogi govt hikes worker wages amid Noida protest; also claims ‘Pak link’, ‘Naxal revival bid’, points to WhatsApp groups| India News

The Uttar Pradesh government announced an interim minimum-wage hike of around 21% for factory workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad on Tuesday, following days of escalating protests in Noida’s industrial belt that left dozens of vehicles torched, over 350 people arrested, and at least five police personnel injured. But even as it moved to address the workers’ core demand, the state government alleged a conspiracy behind the stir — invoking Pakistan, Naxalism, and “anti-national forces”. Heavy police deployment in Noida’s Phase 2 industrial area after workers’ protest over wage hike demands turned violent. (HT Photo) The protests, which began on April 10 at the Hosiery Complex in Noida’s Phase 2, had been building for months. Workers earning between ₹11,000 and ₹15,000 a month — among the lowest wages in the National Capital Region — watched neighbouring Haryana raise its minimum wage by 35% in the first week of April, from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000. Workers doing comparable work just across the state border wanted the same, hence the central demand was a minimum monthly wage …

Government hikes export duty on diesel to Rs 55.5 per litre and ATF to Rs 42

Government hikes export duty on diesel to Rs 55.5 per litre and ATF to Rs 42

The government on Saturday hiked export duty, or windfall tax, on diesel to Rs 55.5 per litre and on aviation fuel ATF to Rs 42 a litre. The duty hikes would be applicable with immediate effect, the finance ministry said in a notification. The government had, on March 26, imposed an export duty of Rs 21.50 a litre on diesel, and Rs 29.5 per litre on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The duties were levied to increase domestic availability of the fuel amid the war in West Asia. They were also aimed at not allowing exporters to take undue advantage due to price differences, as globally crude oil prices had risen since the beginning of the war. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, triggering sweeping retaliation from Tehran. On April 8, Iran, the United States and Israel agreed on a two-week ceasefire in the war that tore across the Middle East and disrupted the global energy market.Export duty on petrol continues to remain nil. The revised rates, aimed at reducing the gap between prevailing market rates and notified circle rates, are scheduled to come into effect from April 1, 2026, following a public consultation process. Across Haryana, this marks the third such revision since the 2024 assembly elections, with several districts witnessing proposed increases of up to 75%. Proposal covers residential, commercial and farm land; premium areas see modest rise, expressway sectors face biggest jump. (Parveen Kumar/HT) According to a district government spokesperson, “the proposed rates have been uploaded for public feedback, with objections and suggestions invited until 4.30pm on March 30.” The circle rate is the minimum price at which a residential, commercial, industrial or agricultural property can be registered for sale.
