This Lagaan actor met his British wife on film’s set: ‘She’s learnt Hindi now’ | Bollywood News

Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2001 seminal period sports drama Lagaan, starring Aamir Khan, completely changed both the life and career of actor Amin Hajee, who played Bagga, the temple drummer, in the movie. Last week, he attended the film’s 25th anniversary celebrations, hosted by Aamir Khan Productions, in Mumbai, accompanied by his daughters and wife Charlotte Whitby-Coles, whom he met for the first time on the movie’s set. Amin Hajee recalled recently that he met his wife Charlotte, thanks to her brother Jamie, who starred in Lagaan as a member of the British cricket team. “My brother-in-law today, Jamie, at that time was playing county cricket. They tested him and they liked him. He is 6’5″ tall. So they told him you are on,” recounted Amin. Since the makers also wanted a number of British extras as the audience for the climactic cricket match, they asked Jamie to get the women of his family along. “They said, ‘We will pay for their tickets, we will even give them a stipend. We want them to sit for those …

Is Obsession getting more shows impacting Main Vaapas Aaunga, Bandar and other Hindi releases? Trade experts weigh in

The success of the Hollywood horror film Obsession has become a case study in world cinema, but in India, it has had an adverse effect on Hindi films. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently called out how theatre chains have been giving more shows to Obsession over Hindi releases, including his film Bandar and films releases the past Friday – Main Vaapas Aaunga, Governor and others. Obsession is running with more shows than new Hindi releases like Main Vaapas Aaunga We spoke to trade experts on how this move impacts Hindi film industry and the business at the box office, and the consensus is that it boils down to what the audience wants. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “Nothing is coming in the industry except bad content. If Anurag Kashyap thinks it is because of Obsession that Bandar is not doing well, he should see the collections. Bandar is not doing well even otherwise, so the number of shows isn’t going to make a difference. Critical acclaim is not the same as the box office, and when …

CITU urges Haryana to extend deadline, publish Labour Code Rules in Hindi

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded that the Haryana government extend the deadline for suggestions on draft Labour Code rules and publish them in Hindi, calling the current process a violation of workers’ rights. CITU state general secretary Jai Bhagwan and vice president Satveer Singh submitted a memorandum to Deputy Labour Commissioner Paramjit Dhull in Chandigarh in the absence of the State Labour Commissioner. The Union said the Haryana administration released draft rules for the Code on Wages on May 4, Industrial Relations Code on May 5, and Social Security Code on May 7, with a one-month window for amendments. CITU objected that the rules were issued only in English, unlike the Central Government’s versions which are in both Hindi and English. “Publishing rules only in English disregards regulations and makes it impossible for workers, union activists and stakeholders to read or suggest changes. This amounts to a disregard for the fundamental rights of workers,” the leaders said. They also argued that no consultations were held with trade unions or employer representatives …

The silken voice of Hindi cinema falls silent

The silken voice of Hindi cinema falls silent

Suman Kalyanpur, who touched the deepest corners of our hearts with her silken voice, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday (May 31, 2026) night after a brief illness. Like a gentle wind bearing the fragrance of first rain, Kalyanpur’s voice possessed a luminous clarity that spoke directly to the listener. It never knocked on the door of the heart — it felt like it was already nestled within, like a long-lost memory waiting to be remembered. Her understated and intimate expressions made her songs feel like quiet confessions. In Hindi cinema’s golden age, when competition was not always fair, and musical giants carried huge egos, Kalyanpur viewed singing not as a vehicle for fame but as a pure, spiritual extension of her early love for the fine arts. Underappreciated even after delivering massive chartbusters, she remained remarkably soft-spoken, media-shy, and genuinely embarrassed by extravagant praise.
