Government tightens FCRA norms with revised penalties for violations

The home ministry has revised the compounding penalties for a number of offences under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010. The meeting was held in New Delhi on November 6 and 7. Although the discussion, led by MHA’s northeast advisor AK Mishra and senior leaders from KNO and UPF, dismissed any policy creation for a new union territory, it tried to focus on the grievances of the tribals in Manipur. IMPHAL: The ministry of home affairs (MHA) met with representatives the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS) on Wednesday morning in Imphal’s Babupara, to chalk out a roadmap to restore peace in Manipur. This comes a day after home ministry met leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) and other Kuki bodies, including the committee on tribal unity (COTU). Only 241 vehicles, and one vehicle carrying essential items, were able to move along NH-37 (Imphal-Silchar via Dimapur) and NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur) respectively, the Manipur police control room reported on Tuesday (PTI) The KZC and COTU are Kuki bodies, while FOCS is a Meitei body. “A.K. The panel was constituted in November 2023 based on the information provided by US authorities regarding the activities of some organised criminal groups, terrorist organisations, drug peddlers, etc. In their latest press release, the Home Department stated that the panel received full cooperation from the US authorities and that it followed their lead while conducting its investigation. Image Source : PTI/FILE Representative Image The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a major expansion of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which will create two new battalions adding to 2 lakh personnel to the force. With the latest expansions, the number of battalions in CISF will rise to 15. The expansion will open over 2,000 new posts in the industrial security force, as each newly sanctioned battalion will consist of 1,025 personnel, creating 2,050 new posts. The battalions will be led by officers of senior commandant rank. These new units will play a crucial role in addressing the CISF’s increasing demands, especially in areas such as internal security and the management of high-security jails. The reserve battalions consist of personnel specifically trained and equipped who are experienced in handling the security of high-security jails and other undertakings. The additional battalions will improve the CISF’s capabilities to respond rapidly during emergencies. Image Source : X Representational picture Ministry of Home Affairs amended the Model Prison Manual, 2016 and the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 to address caste-based discrimination within prisons across states and Union Territories, and to replace the existing definition of ‘Habitual Offender’.  The MHA also directed all states and the Union Territories to take note of the changes and ensure strict compliance with all directions. The move followed the Supreme Court’s landmark judgement dated October 3, 2024, in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 1404 of 2023, titled Sukanya Shantha vs. Union of India and Others. New Delhi: The government will allocate space for a memorial of former prime minister Manmohan Singh and this has been communicated to his family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the Union home ministry said on Friday night. In a late-night release titled “Facts of the matter regarding memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh”, the ministry said the government received a request to allocate space for a memorial for Singh from the Congress chief. Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated to Mr Kharge and the family of Manmohan Singh that the government would allocate space for the memorial. In the meanwhile, cremation and other formalities can happen because a Trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it, the home ministry said. Dr Singh, who headed the Congress-led UPA government and is credited with economic reforms, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He was India’s prime minister for 10 years between 2004 and 2014.
