What to know about Jimmy Lai’s Hong Kong journey from media mogul and activist to convict | World News

The 78-year-old outspoken critic of China’s ruling Communist Party awaits sentencing Monday after being convicted in December of conspiring to commit sedition and collude with foreign forces. Observers say his landmark trial came to symbolise a crackdown that began in 2020 on press and other freedoms that has changed Hong Kong, the former British colony that returned to China’s control in 1997. The Hong Kong government insists Lai’s case has nothing to do with press freedom, but instead is an example of righteousness upheld by the law. A migrant from mainland China, he made a fortune in the garment industry in Hong Kong and later founded the Apple Daily newspaper, where he wrote articles criticising the Chinese and Hong Kong governments for limiting freedoms. The publication eventually was shuttered and his words became trial evidence. Here is what to know about his unusual journey to political activism that has ended, at least for the moment, in prison. Story continues below this ad Lai was born in 1947 in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, once …

Student jailed for 3 months in Hong Kong for hiring impostor to take TOEFL

We often see students coming up with unusual ways to pass their exams, but one case in Hong Kong has shocked many for crossing the line into fraud. The 22-year-old Chinese student has been jailed for three months. (Pexels/Representational Image) According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a 22-year-old Chinese student has been jailed for three months after paying an impostor to take an English proficiency test on her behalf. The student, Huang Xinyi from Fujian province, submitted the fake result to Lingnan University in Hong Kong to meet her graduation requirements. Zero tolerance for fraud: The case was heard at Tuen Mun Court on Monday. Magistrate David Chum Yau-fong said a jail term was necessary to send a strong warning, as similar cheating cases have increased in recent years. “Education resources are wasted unnecessarily to conduct verifications because some students are using various means to deceive their schools. This is also unfair to other students.” Chum said. Xinyi admitted she paid US$300 for a Test of English as a Foreign Language …

HSBC Launches Blockchain-Based Tokenised Deposit Service in Hong Kong

HSBC Holdings on Thursday announced a blockchain-backed banking initiative in Hong Kong. The bank said its tokenised deposit service is now available to Hong Kong-based corporate clients. This is the first bank-led blockchain payment system to be introduced in the region. HSBC clients who hold corporate wallets will be able to process instant USD to HKD transactions with this “always on” service, according to the bank. The initiative aligns with Project Ensemble, a roadmap to explore the tokenisation market being monitored by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). The tokenised deposit service was built on HSBC’s proprietary network and technologies, the bank said on Thursday. While the initiative will introduce Hong Kong’s financial ecosystem to blockchain technology, HSBC expects to improve its own digital money abilities with this project. “Tokenised deposits, when supported by regulated financial institutions, can offer a safe and fully compliant approach to improving payments and cash management for corporates,” said Lewis Sun, HSBC’s Global Head of Domestic and Emerging Payments and Global Payments Solutions. “This service sets a new benchmark for …

* Rika Woo juggles life as Cantonese opera and J-Pop artiste Photo essay: https://bit.ly/3QDAy32 * By Tyrone Siu, Jessie Pang and Joyce Zhou HONG KONG, – Appealing to a younger audience, Rika Woo dons a white J-pop-style sleeveless top and a long white skirt embroidered with lace as she performs Japanese songs for an energetic group of fans in Hong Kong. On a starkly different stage, Woo paints her face with bright theatrical make-up, wears striking, colourful costumes embroidered with purple flowers and head-dresses adorned with pearls and lace veils, to perform Cantonese opera. The 31-year-old local entertainer is rare in Hong Kong for trying to appeal to audiences – old and young – as a cross cultural artiste in both the centuries-old art form of Cantonese opera and the modern music phenomenon of J-pop, in which she performs with her all-girl group Otome Syndream. “I want to be the bridge between both cultures” said Woo. “I hope people can appreciate the beauty of tradition and be open to pop culture.” Both are struggling to …

US Postal Service suspends incoming packages from China, Hong Kong | News Today News

The U.S. Postal Service said it would temporarily suspend parcels from China and Hong Kong, after President Donald Trump shut a trade loophole this week used by retailers including Temu and Shein to ship low-value packages duty-free to the U.S. USPS said the change will not impact the flow of letters and ‘flats’ from China and Hong Kong. It did not immediately comment on whether this was tied to Trump’s change to ending de minimis shipments from China and other countries. Story continues below this ad Fast-fashion retailer Shein and online dollar-store Temu, both of which sell products ranging from toys to smartphones, have grown rapidly in the U.S. thanks in part to the de minimis exemption. The two firms together likely accounted for more than 30% of all packages shipped to the United States each day under the de minimis provision, the U.S. congressional committee on China said in a June 2023 report. Nearly half of all packages shipped under de minimis come from China, according to the report. Shein and Temu did not …

Hong Kong Announces Supervisory Incubator to Help Banks Safely Test Blockchain Technology

The initiative was announced on Wednesday, during the FiNETech4 event organised by the HKMA. The emergence of Web3 and its potential offerings to the global financial services was among the subjects of discussions in the event. The newly formed body will focus on helping banks try risk management capabilities around deposits and loan services. The practice of tokenised deposits will be the core area of focus for the incubator, the HKMA said. The HKMA announced the creation of the new incubator in the presence of over 300 professionals from the banking, insurance, and provident fund sectors. Commenting on the launch, HKMA’s Deputy Chief Executive, Arthur Yuen said, “The Supervisory Incubator for DLT is a key component of our strategy to foster the development of DLT-based banking solutions that are safe, efficient, and beneficial to the industry and the wider community.” How the HKMA’s Incubator Works Hong Kong’s banks …

Hundreds gathered in Hong Kong for the city’s first pyrotechnics drone show | News Today News

Hundreds gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday to watch the city’s first pyrotechnics drone show, as part of a campaign to raise support and awareness of panda conservation. The 10-minute drone show featured 1,000 drones, some of which were equipped with fireworks, flying over Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour and forming images of the city’s giant pandas. During certain parts of the spectacle, some drones displayed fireworks, while hundreds of others formed a three-dimensional panda that slowly rotated in the sky. Some eager spectators arrived hours before the show to ensure that they would get a good viewing spot. Eddie Chow, a father who brought his two kids to the drone show, said such shows could attract more tourists to Hong Kong. “I think the rundown was great, combining fireworks and drones is a very special theme, Hong Kong should have more of these activities,” said Chow, adding that Saturday’s spectacle was his first experience in watching a drone show. Other spectators, such as Jodi Hung, a Hong Kong resident in her 20s, also praised the …
