File | Photo Credit: PTI West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) launched a cleanliness drive at a Hooghly river ghat in Bagbazar area in north Kolkata and said efforts would be made to ensure proper implementation of the ‘Namami Gange’ programme. Mr. Adhikari began the programme by offering prayers at a temple located at the historic ‘Mayer Ghat’, associated with Ramakrishna Paramahansa’s wife Sarada Devi, and cleaned the ghat with a broom. BJP leaders Agnimitra Paul and Tapas Roy, along with senior officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), were present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said cleanliness, development, law and order and employment generation are priorities for his government. “Work under ‘Namami Gange’ should be carried out properly. It was not done in the past, and we will do it. The Ganga river should be kept clean,” he said. Amidst the ongoing second phase polling across 142 constituencies in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) polling agents reportedly clashed at booth numbers 147 and 148 at the Ramchandrapur Adarsha Bidyabhaban polling station in the Khanakul assembly Constituency. Kolkata: Police have arrested a 29-year-old man and apprehended a minor in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in an abandoned factory in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Thursday evening. For 2nd time this month, EC pulls up Bengal DEOs for not listing apartment complexes for polling booths | Kolkata News

The Election Commission of India (ECI) Tuesday issued an ultimatum to District Electoral Officers (DEOs) of eight districts in West Bengal to submit a list of apartment complexes eligible for setting up polling booths by Wednesday, warning of strict action in case of non-compliance. Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti was in Kolkata on Tuesday, where he held meetings with the concerned DEOs of Kolkata North, Kolkata South, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman. This is not the first instance of the ECI flagging “delays” by Bengal’s district authorities on the issue. Earlier this month, on December 10, the Commission had pulled up DEOs for failing to send proposals for polling stations in large residential complexes.
