Oscar hopefuls including Jessie Buckley and Timothée Chalamet gather for luncheon and class picture

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Nearly all of the 230 people up for Oscars across 24 categories gathered Tuesday for the Academy Award nominees luncheon, an event that functions as a celebration, group portrait session and orientation for next month’s big ceremony. Oscar hopefuls including Jessie Buckley and Timothée Chalamet gather for luncheon and class picture Nominees including Jessie Buckley, Timothée Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler and Emma Stone sat for lunch and stood for a class photo alongside nominees for awards including best animated short and the newly created casting Oscar. The luncheon is a relatively egalitarian affair where big names mix with small ones and veteran nominees stand for photos with first-timers. Lynette Howell Taylor, elected in July as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, made her first address to Oscar nominees, and gave them a set of instructions on how to handle their acceptance speeches if they win. “Be prepared,” she said. “Don’t say you didn’t expect it. You have a one in five chance of winning.” She …

Syed Modi International: PV Sindhu survives scare, set to play quarterfinals along with three young Indian hopefuls for company | Badminton News

At the quarterfinals stage of the women’s singles draw at the Syed Modi International, India will have a representative in each of the four matches. One, of course, is PV Sindhu, the stalwart of Indian badminton who has seen it all. But the encouraging sign is that among the other three one was born 2005 and two in 2007. On Thursday, the three young Indians – Tasnim Mir and the pair of 17-year-olds in Unnati Hooda and Shriyanshi Valishetty – registered impressive second-round wins, each against higher-ranked players. Tasnim got the better of fifth seed Anupama Upadhyaya 21-15, 13-21, 21-7 in 53 minutes. Unnati overcame the heartbreak of losing two three-game battles against fourth seed Pornpicha Choeikeewong in the past, to prevail 21-18, 22-20 in a match that featured many grueling rallies. The most impressive result for India was perhaps that of Shriyanshi who beat the second seed and in-form Malvika Bansod 21-12, 21-15 in just 34 minutes. In the form Malvika has been in recent weeks, a final against Sindhu was on the cards …

“Performing Well In IPL…”: Ex-India Star’s Big Message To T20 World Cup Hopefuls

Irfan Pathan, the former India left-arm fast-bowler, believes performances from certain players in the ongoing IPL 2024 season shouldn’t guarantee anyone’s automatic selection for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup happening in the West Indies and USA from June 1. Pathan was replying to the notion of recency bias being a factor in India’s squad selection for the T20 World Cup. “I was part of the Indian team when Cheeka sir (Krishnamachari Srikkanth) was a selector. I got injured and was dropped from the team after that, despite having played for India. No, no, that’s the truth. But I’ll tell you, I have no qualms at all. I have great respect for him, but I’m saying, at that time, the situation was different. The mindset, perhaps of the captain or the selection committee, was different. “But let’s talk about the 2010s. Wriddhiman Saha was literally out of the team for a year due to injury. When he recovered, he returned to the squad and made it into the Playing XI after a year. A year …

How India’s T20 WC Hopefuls Have Fared In Comparison To Dhoni In IPL 2024

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has seen plenty of players making their case through strong performances to be selected for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies. One particular area that’s seen lots of debate regarding who the right personnel for the position would be is India’s wicketkeeping slot. While there have been a few glovemen making strong cases for their selection in the squad through their IPL 2024 performances, one Indian wicketkeeper who seems to be hogging the limelight every time he steps out to the middle to bat is the legendary MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who won a T20 as well as a 50-over World Cup as India skipper and was the last man to lead the country to an ICC trophy following the 2013 Champions Trophy triumph, has looked in scintillating form with the bat in IPL 2024. Despite not spending much time at the crease as a result of him coming into bat lower down the order when there aren’t many overs left, Dhoni has made the …

Ranji Trophy Preview: Veterans, Young Hopefuls Embark On A Fresh Journey

Bright dreams of a new journey, desperation to stage a comeback and desire to rediscover old glory will be the dominant themes of this season’s Ranji Trophy that begins at various centres across the country from Friday. On the periphery, the latest edition of the premier domestic competition might appear to be having little or no say in the cricketing fortunes of a clutch of players, especially with India’s batting and bowling line-ups almost sealed in Tests. The selectors also might not ring in too many changes for the five-match home rubber against England later this month. Also India will play the red-ball format only in September at home against Bangladesh, courtesy an avalanche of white-ball matches, including the IPL and the T20 World Cup in June. So, it might seem like there is zero incentive to toil in some remote grounds across the country over the next month and thereabouts. But in reality, a whole lot more is bubbling beneath that seemingly staid surface of insignificance over this Ranji Trophy. No one will be …
