Ireland cricketers can ‘boycott’ Afghanistan series amid ‘moral discomfort’ of hosting 5 home ODIs

2 min readMar 24, 2026 08:09 PM IST Having decided to go ahead with their five-match home ODI series against the Afghanistan men’s cricket team, the Cricket Ireland board has said that it will leave it up to the players to commit to their participation. Amid calls for a boycott, Ireland had last week announced the five-match series slated to be held in August, despite carrying a ‘moral discomfort’ of playing against a board that has disregarded women’s cricket. Female participation in sports was barred in Afghanistan five years ago when the Taliban reassumed power in the country. Greame West, director of high performance at Cricket Ireland, said that the board will leave it up to the players to decide on their availability for the series to be played in Bready and Stormont. “I think you have to. We have had conversations with both the men’s and women’s teams to gauge opinion. There are concerns, as you would anticipate, but when we had similar conversations with the board and considered all the factors, there is …

Oscar ratings fall 9% in Conan O’Brien’s second year hosting

The 98th Oscars hosted by Conan O’Brien saw a dip in ratings after several years of gains. The Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday said that just under 17.9 million viewers tuned into Sunday’s show, which aired live on ABC and was streamed on Hulu. Oscar ratings fall 9% in Conan O’Brien’s second year hosting The ratings are down 9% from last year’s post-pandemic high of 19.7 million viewers who tuned in for O’Brien’s inaugural year as host, when “Anora” swept the awards. The show also yielded a more significant 14% decline from last year in viewership from adults aged 18-49. Sunday’s Oscars saw a showdown between two Warner Bros. films, “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners,” with the former winning best picture and director. Michael B. Jordan won best actor for “Sinners,” the most nominated film in history, with 16, that also broke the record for the most losses by a single film, with 12. And yet despite the dip in audience, the Oscars are still the No. 1 primetime entertainment telecast of the 2025-2026 …

Vir Das on why roast-style hosting like the Oscars cannot happen in Indian award shows: ‘Star egos won’t take a joke’

Actor and comedian Vir Das has hosted a few award shows in India, and is aware of how they function with so many stars and actors present. Can prominent award shows in India feature roast-style hosting like the Oscars? Vir does not think so, as he noted in a new post on his X account. (Also read: Conan O’Brien addresses ‘frightening times’ in unusually political Oscars monologue; roasts Timothee Chalamet, Netflix) Vir Das has commented on award shows and how they differ in the West and in India. What Vir wrote In a new post, Vir began, “Why doesn’t India do a Gervais or even a Conan-style hosting of a major film awards? Well, as someone who wrote the script for many Indian awards for five years. Here’s why. The point of having comedians host and roast the Oscars or film awards is that for a night, a jester would humanise the most beautiful chosen people in the world, since they were being celebrated already. That’s when any joke is a punch-up.” ‘A huge star …

India Open 2026: BWF acknowledges hygiene, climate, animal control issue; confident of hosting World C’ships in Delhi

Amidst the furore over unhygienic courts, cold temperatures, and bird poop at the 2026 India Open Super 750 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in Delhi, the Badminton World Federation stressed that the arena is an upgrade over the KD Jadhav Stadium where the tournament was held previously. “The feedback received — both positive and constructive — is invaluable in shaping the best possible environment for this tournament and future championships,” a statement from the federation read. The apex body acknowledged that the seasonal conditions have posed challenges and also acknowledged the Badminton Association of India’s (BAI) efforts to control whatever they can. “Managing factors related largely to seasonal conditions, such as the haze and cold weather affecting the air quality and temperature inside the venue has posed challenges this week. However, our assessments confirm that the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex represents a significant upgrade from KD Jadhav Stadium, offering improved infrastructure,” the statement read. “While some areas of implementation, including general cleanliness and hygiene plus animal control have required attention, the Badminton Association of …

‘Not off the cards’: Cricket Australia on MCG hosting day-night Boxing Day Test | Cricket News

With the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket ground seeing a record attendance of 93,442, it meant that the all-time record for a single day attendance at MCG was broken. With the earlier record of 93,013 during a Boxing Day Test achieved in the 2013 Boxing Day Test, Friday’s attendance record meant that history was created at the iconic ground. While the 100,024 capacity stadium has hosted a women’s day-night Test, the iconic ground has never hosted a men’s day-night pink ball Test. Cricket Australia CEO shared his thoughts about the ground hosting a Boxing Day Day-Night Test and counted the option as ‘not off the cards’. “Look, it’s not off the cards. We’ve been talking a lot about the strength of pink-ball cricket, it was amazing this year in Brisbane, it has been really good in Adelaide,” Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg told the media on Friday. Only the Sydney Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground have not hosted a pink-ball day-night Test match. Perth, Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide have …
