A file photo of Howrah Bridge | Photo Credit: PTI The iconic Howrah Bridge connecting the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah will be “fully closed” for vehicular transport from Saturday (November 16, 2024) night to Sunday (November 17, 2024) morning for a safety and health audit of the structure. “Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge) will be fully closed (both ways) for all types of vehicular movement from 2330 hrs. of 16.11.2024 to 0430 hrs. of 17.11.2024 in connection with the comprehensive health check-up of Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge),” said a press statement by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata. The health audit is aimed at increasing the lifespan of the bridge. The SPMPT has engaged RITES, as an expert agency deployed for comprehensive health study of Howrah Bridge. “Last health check up of Rabindra Setu was conducted in 1983-1988 after continuous service of the bridge for 40 years,” the statement added. Image Source : FILE PHOTO Representative image Explosion in train: At least four passengers were injured after an explosion took place in a general coach of the Howrah Mail near Sirhind railway station in Fatehgarh district of Punjab, Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said on Sunday.  Explosion due to firecrackers  According to the officials, the explosion occurred at around 10:30 pm on Saturday night in a plastic bucket filled with firecrackers while the train was en route to Howrah from Amritsar. Four passengers, including a woman, were injured in the incident.  GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Singh said that all the injured were taken to Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital.  Preliminary investigation suggests that the explosion took place in a plastic bucket, which contained some firecrackers, in the general compartment of the train, he said. Samples will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory. Further investigation into the incident is underway, Singh said. Three children lost their lives after a fire broke out in a house in West Bengal`s Howrah, a fire officer said on Saturday. The incident took place in Uluberia town on the occasion of Kali Puja. Upon receiving the information about the fire, two fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Divisional Fire Officer of Howrah, Ranjan Kumar Ghosh said that the charred bodies of three children (9 years old, 4 years old and 2.5 years old) have been recovered and sent to the hospital for further medical procedures. “We received information about a fire in a house. Two fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot as soon as the information was received. The fire has been extinguished but three children (9 yr old, 4 yr old and 2.5 yr old) lost their lives in this incident. A laboratory technician has been arrested for allegedly molesting a minor girl at a state-run hospital in West Bengal’s Howrah district, police said. The incident took place on Saturday evening at Howrah District Headquarters Hospital, where the 12-year-old girl was admitted last week, they said.
