The Hidden Labour of Women The Ramadan table, for many, is closely linked to childhood memories — fruit chaat, pakoras, and glasses of Rooh Afza before sunset, tied to evenings spent waiting for adhan. For the women I spoke to, those memories often begin in the kitchen, watching their mothers prepare iftar and gradually becoming part of the ritual themselves. Yusra Husain, 34, an independent journalist now based in Mumbai, recalls her childhood Ramadans in Lucknow. “My sisters and I would watch our parents fast and argue over who would keep a fast first. As we grew older, we began helping our mother prepare iftar. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Bengal, women are set to hold an iftar party for women on Saturday (March 7, 2026) evening, the invitees being mainly non-Muslims who will get to know more about the month of Ramzan and traditions associated with it.
