3 min readApr 21, 2026 06:32 PM IST Current world champion D Gukesh has experienced a wretched run of form ever since he became the youngest world champion in chess history in December 2024. Not only have results been dire, Gukesh has also lost about 51 rating points from where he was when he became the 18th world champion in chess history. To further pile pressure on him, former world champions like Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen have pointed out how Javokhir Sindarov, who will be the challenger to Gukesh for the world champion’s throne later this year, will be the favorite given his recent form that helped him win the Candidates tournament in Cyprus without a single defeat in 14 rounds. Some of the comments have appeared to undermine Gukesh’s credentials as a worthy world champion. Carlsen, in particular, commented on Gukesh’s “very obvious weaknesses when it comes to his understanding” in a recent event. Carlsen had even said that Sindarov would be the favourite against Gukesh. When five-time world champion and Gukesh’s mentor, …

Why esports is becoming impossible to ignore in Indian sport

Why esports is becoming impossible to ignore in Indian sport

For decades, the Indian sporting imagination was bounded by the boundary rope of a cricket pitch. But walk into any urban cafe or ride a metro in 2026, and you’ll see a different kind of athlete in training. They aren’t usually wielding bats but rather they are mastering “frame-perfect” maneuvers on high-end smartphones. Once dismissed as a distraction, esports has officially shed its “hobby” label to become a cornerstone of the Indian sporting landscape. A Government-Sanctioned Revolution The most significant shift hasn’t been in the pixels, but in the policy. The Government of India formally recognized esports in December 2022, when a Presidential Gazette Notification brought competitive gaming under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ purview. This along with the Online Gaming Bill 2025, which decoupled competitive gaming from the murky waters of “real-money gaming” and gambling, has propelled esports to newer heights. Today, esports is a medal discipline in the CM Trophy in Tamil Nadu and a staple in the Khelo India Youth Games. By providing a structured regulatory framework, the government has …

(Each week, Deputy Editor Liz Mathew maps the changing political landscape from New Delhi, focusing on power equations, policy moves, and shifts in alliances.) In the bipolar landscape of Kerala politics that the BJP is seeking to break, a rather important and yet overlooked role is that of major community organisations representing different caste and religious interests. And with just months to go for the Assembly elections, outfits such as the Nair Service Society and Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, the Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulama (AP faction) and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and the Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (CAASA) are trying to play a role in state politics as caste and religious questions dominate the discourse. While these outfits have their spheres of influence, the degree to which they determine the voting choices of their members is undetermined. Left and Hindu votes The NSS and the SNDP are among Kerala’s most influential caste groups. Recent calls by NSS general secretary Sukumaran Nair and SNDP leader Vellappally Natesan for Hindu unity, and their support …
