Muslim population in India may match Indonesia after Census, says Kiren Rijiju

Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that the Muslim population in India is likely to be nearly the same as that of Indonesia after the Census. Kiren Rijiju said that the Muslim population in India is likely to be nearly the same as that of Indonesia soon. (PTI) “The Muslim population in the country is likely to be nearly on par with Indonesia’s population. Once the Census (data) is out, it will be the likely outcome,” the Union minister for minority affairs told reporters after a programme here. As the last Census was conducted in 2011 and the decennial exercise could not be conducted in 2021, the population would have grown, he said. “Whatever the numbers of whichever (community) are, all are Indians,” Rijiju added. Highlighting concerns over the declining population of the Parsi community, he stated that their numbers stand at around 52,000 to 55,000 in the country. The Parsis are the smallest minority community in India and the government is working to protect them and ensure their numbers do not shrink further, …

US crackdown fails to deter illegal migration from Punjab, Haryana | India News

US crackdown fails to deter illegal migration from Punjab, Haryana | India News

Despite the US stepping up efforts to curb illegal immigration and reports of upcoming deportations to India, travel agents in Punjab and Haryana say demand for migration to the US remains high. Even with strict policies and news of deportations set for tomorrow, young people in both states continue to seek ways to enter the US, often through dangerous, illegal routes. The “Dunki route,” which involves crossing the US-Mexico border via unauthorized paths and traveling through countries in Africa and South America to reach Mexico, remains a popular choice. Despite the growing risks and crackdowns, migrants are still willing to take this route, along with other illegal alternatives. “The demand for US visas, even through unofficial routes, is as high as ever. Many young people from Punjab and Haryana are willing to take the risk, driven by the promise of better opportunities and the American dream,” said Sonu Singh, a Jalandhar-based travel agent. India dismisses Canadian commission’s ‘insinuations’ of election interference | Latest News India

India has firmly rejected the “insinuations” made against it in a Canadian commission’s report, which investigated allegations of foreign interference in Canada’s elections. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, left, walks past India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation site, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. (AP File) The ministry of external affairs (MEA) strongly responded, dismissing the report’s claims and saying that Canada has, in fact, been “consistently interfering” in India’s internal affairs. “We have seen a report about alleged activities on purported interference. It is in fact Canada which has been consistently interfering in India’s internal affairs,” the MEA said. “This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organised criminal activities. We reject the report’s insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced,” MEA said in a statement. The Globe and Mail reported that India was suspected of using proxy agents to secretly fund candidates from three political parties in …

"If Illegal Migrants Are In Millions…": Veep On "Demographic Disruption"

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday said “demographic disruption” is emerging as a serious threat to nationalism, and called for united efforts against attempts to change “organic demography” through allurement and temptation. During an interaction with students on the theme ‘Ideas for building Better Bharat’, he said there is a need to deal with the problem of illegal migration, adding it has taken the shape of “unmanageable dimension” with migrants straining the country’s resources, employment, health and education sectors. Batting for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he asked how anybody could object to “something that is written in the Constitution”. Students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai were present at the programme held at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium in the state capital. “There is a serious cause of concern we need to address in togetherness. Over 40 Pakistanis feared drowned in migrant boat capsize off Africa | Pakistan News

More than 40 Pakistanis are feared to have drowned in the capsizing of a boat off West Africa’s Atlantic coastline, which has emerged as a primary point of departure for migrants aiming to reach Europe. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths and stressed the need for strict measures to curb human trafficking. Zardari’s comments in a statement late Thursday came after a Spain-based migrant rights group, Walking Borders, said 50 people had died on their way to the Canary Islands and that 44 of them were Pakistanis. The group said the migrants began their journey on January 2. Pakistan said it had been informed by its embassy in Morocco that a boat carrying 80 passengers, including some Pakistanis, had set off from Mauritania and capsized near Dakhla, a Moroccan-controlled port city in the disputed Western Sahara. Millions of people migrate to Europe each year, the vast majority using legal and regular means. A record 8,500 migrants died in 2023, says UN

The UN’s International Organisation for Migration said the biggest increase in deaths was on the Mediterranean Sea. File | Photo Credit: AP A total of 8,565 migrants died on land and sea routes worldwide last year, the U.N. migration agency said March 6, a record high since it began tallying deaths a decade ago. The International Organisation for Migration said the biggest increase in deaths last year was on the treacherous Mediterranean Sea crossing, to 3,129 from 2,411 in 2022. However, that was well below the record 5,136 deaths recorded in the Mediterranean in 2016 as huge numbers of Syrians, Afghans and others fled conflicts toward Europe. IOM said the total number of deaths among migrants in 2023 was nearly 20% more than in 2022. It said most of the deaths last year, about 3,700, came from drowning. The Geneva-based migration agency cautioned that the figures likely underestimate the real toll, and factors such as improved data collection methods play a part in its calculations. “Every single one of them is a terrible human tragedy that …
