In a recent order, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad noted that the state’s groundwater department had submitted a report that 193 washing centres had been identified in Gautam Buddha Nagar, of which 55 are in industrial areas and 138 in non-industrial areas. It noted that the report detailed that among the 55 industrial units, only 14 have the requisite permissions, while 12 have applications pending. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Bihar Unit, on Friday (July 31, 2026), criticised Bihar police, in particular the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gandhi Maidan Police Station, Akhilesh Kumar Mishra, for illegal detention, handcuffing and harassing the PUCL members for raising voice against denial of due process to detained students. PUCL, Bihar Unit General Secretary Sarfaraz said that Akash Keshav, Advocate-on-Record (AOR), Patna High Court and Vrati Kumar, law graduate from Calcutta University, social worker, and independent filmmaker/director, were illegally detained on Sunday (July 26, 2026) and Monday (July 27, 2026). Officials said on Monday that a Municipal Corporation team razed the houses, allegedly illegally built on government land, using sledgehammers and drilling machines. More than 100 police personnel were deployed at the site during the operation. The administration said these structures were found to lack the required approvals, registrations, and valid documentation, and that they were built on land belonging to the Ajmer Municipal Corporation. Action was taken after notices were issued and no satisfactory response was received, officials claimed. Additional SP Himanshu Jangid told The Indian Express that the two women, who police identified as Afsana (36) and Afreen (36), were accused in a case of human trafficking and gangrape of a minor, which came to light on June 13.
