Apple iMac M4 review: who is this for, exactly?

Apple iMac M4 review: who is this for, exactly?

The M4 iMac is a beautiful computer that feels more and more like it fell out of a universe where laptops never took off.  You can see it, can’t you? In a world without laptops, the iMac would be the ultimate computer. Instead of a box and a screen with a tangle of wires leading everywhere, everything you need is right there, jammed into an impossibly thin aluminum chassis. Monitor, processor, speakers, webcam, microphones, and all the ports: all built in. It’s elegant. It’s restrained. It’s lovely. It’s plenty fast enough for most people. The iMac would be in every library, in dorm rooms, in cubicles, in computer labs and living rooms. People would haul them to coffee shops.  Now imagine going to that universe and showing them a MacBook Pro. People might go for that instead.  The Good Still beautiful 16GB of RAM in the base model Great webcam, speakers, and mic Display is pleasant to look at The Bad Still using the same 24-inch screen from 2021 Base model still underequipped Can’t be …

Apple’s first smart home display could pay homage to a classic iMac

Apple’s first smart home display could pay homage to a classic iMac

The new smart home display will apparently be small. Gurman writes it will have a square display angled above a small base that makes it “reminiscent of the circular bottom of the iMac G4 from a couple of decades ago.” It may have speakers, essentially making it the HomePod with a screen that’s been rumored as one of Apple’s possible smart home futures. Gurman didn’t say how much this device might cost but has hinted at an “affordable” smart home device with a square display in the past. Rumors have suggested Apple will release a $1,000 model with a robotic arm that moves the display around, but that’s not expected until 2026 at the earliest, he reiterates today. Both devices are expected to run bespoke versions of some Apple apps, like FaceTime, Calendar, and Notes, and to work with Apple Intelligence, which Apple’s current smart home devices don’t support. I’m on the record as loving the look of the iMac G4 (I do use one as an external display, after all). And the idea that …

Turning an iMac G4 into an external monitor with the DockLite G4 mod

Turning an iMac G4 into an external monitor with the DockLite G4 mod

It’s been 20 years since Apple discontinued the iMac G4, a unique computer with a funky half-globe base and a flatscreen LCD on a fancy hinge and adjustable arm. In its unaltered state, it’s a nice-to-look-at, nostalgic relic that’s unusable in modern contexts. I coveted it and never got to own one at the time, but thanks to Juicy Crumb’s DockLite G4, I’m using this classic iMac every day as an external monitor. The DockLite G4 is a drop-in replacement motherboard for the iMac G4’s board that features an HDMI port, along with three USB-A and a single USB-C port, and 3.5mm ports for audio. Most importantly, it uses the iMac’s existing mounting holes and internal connectors for power and video, so all you need is a couple of screwdrivers and a prying tool — no soldering required. It took about 30 minutes for me to open my eBay-acquired 17-inch 1.25GHz iMac G4, remove the motherboard, put in the DockLite, and close it back up, and suddenly, I could plug in whatever I wanted, from …

Apple Might Hold October Launch Event for Updated iPad Mini, M4-Powered Mac Models: Gurman

Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ launch event is scheduled to take place later today, as the Cupertino company is expected to launch up to four handsets in the iPhone 16 series that will offer Apple Intelligence features, as well as new AirPods and Apple Watch models. This isn’t likely to be the company’s final launch event of the year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says that Apple could unveil new iPad models and well as a new version of its smallest computer — the Mac Mini — next month. In the latest version of his Power On newsletter, Gurman states that Apple could launch new iPad models at an event in October. One of these will be the successor to the iPad Mini (2021) that was launched three years ago, with an A15 Bionic chip. The Bloomberg journalist has not specified which processor will power the upcoming iPad Mini model. Apple has already updated the iPad Air and iPad Pro earlier this year, powered by its M2 and M4 chips, respectively. This suggests that the company could …

Apple iMac, MacBook Pro Models With M4 Chipset Could Launch in November: Report

Apple could launch its refreshed lineup of Mac models in November, according to a report. The new devices are speculated to be powered by the next-generation Apple Silicon chipset dubbed M4, which debuted with the new iPad Pro models on May 7. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been reported to introduce new variants of its iMac, MacBook Pro, and other models. While it usually holds Mac-related events in October around Halloween, it may shift to November this year. This information comes from MacRumors, citing confidential sources, which reported about the probable November 2024 launch timeline of the upcoming Mac models. Apple November Event Expectations MacBook Pro, starting with the entry-level 14-inch model, is expected to get its yearly refresh. It is speculated to get upgraded from an M3 chipset to the M4, which is expected to bring benefits when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) tasks. Meanwhile, the mid-tier and high-end MacBook Pro models will reportedly benefit from the purported M4 Pro and M4 Max SoCs, respectively. MacRumors suggested that all the changes are expected to …

Apple Plans to Overhaul Entire Mac Line With AI-Focused M4 Chips

Apple, aiming to boost sluggish computer sales, is preparing to overhaul its entire Mac line with a new family of in-house processors designed to highlight artificial intelligence. The company, which released its first Macs with M3 chips five months ago, is already nearing production of the next generation — the M4 processor — according to people with knowledge of the matter. The new chip will come in at least three main varieties, and Apple is looking to update every Mac model with it, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been announced. The new Macs are underway at a critical time. After peaking in 2022, Mac sales fell 27 percent in the last fiscal year, which ended in September. In the holiday period, revenue from the computer line was flat. Apple attempted to breathe new life into the Mac business with an M3-focused launch event last October, but those chips didn’t bring major performance improvements over the M2 from the prior year. Apple also is playing catch-up in AI, …

Apple’s Latest Patent Application Reveals New Touchscreen iMac Design for Artists With Wireless Charging Station

In the recent past, Apple has reserved all of its touchscreen software interactions to its iPhones and iPads (iOS and iPadOS) while limiting its iMac and MacBook (macOS) software interactions to a mouse, keyboard and trackpad. While there have been many hardware mods designed to turn the iMac’s interface into a touchscreen one, these would be rather limited as the interface has not been designed keeping these touch interactions in mind. The closest an Apple MacBook ever came to a touchscreen implementation was in 2016, with the new Touch Bar feature introduced on its Pro laptop lineup, which was then replaced with regular function keys in 2023. It was only with the recent macOS Ventura update in 2022 that macOS moved an inch closer to a touchscreen interface with an overhauled System Settings (previously System Preferences). It brought both iPadOS and MacOS on par in terms of design elements and also introduced a new mode called Stage Manager on MacOS (introduced a year prior with iPadOS 16), which helped organise opened apps better on both …
