This image is used for representational purposes only. | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto The Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Special Court Special Judge, Anju Meera Birla, has sentenced Manu M., a 40-year-old cricket coach, to 35 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹66,000 on him for sexually assaulting a female student. He will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of six years and nine months if he defaults on the fine payment. While the verdict pertains to the second sexual abuse case registered against him, the court also found the coach guilty in a third case under similar circumstances. The sentence in the case will be pronounced on Saturday (June 27, 2026). Six cases were registered against the accused in all. The trials for four of the cases have been completed. The judgment states that the sentence for the second case will commence only after the completion of the prison term in the first case. The prosecution, led by special public prosecutor R.S. The accused, Vasanth, was arrested based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents with the Namagiripettai police on December 29, 2019. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. After trial, judge T. Munusamy on Tuesday (April 28, 2026) found him guilty and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of ₹4,000. A special court in Gujarat’s Bhuj city on Friday sentenced six Pakistani nationals to 20 years in prison for smuggling heroin valued at ₹384 crore into India. A case was registered against the accused at ATS police station under the NDPS Act. (X/@narcoticsbureau/ Representational) The accused were apprehended from a Pakistani fishing boat off Gujarat coast in December 2021 in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad. Holding the six men guilty, Judge V A Buddha of the special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act court said they were involved in a serious crime of targeting India’s youth and pushing them into drug addiction. The accused were identified as Mohammad Wagher (31), Dadhansh Wagher (24), Sagar Wagher (23), Ismail Barala (75), Mohammad Kungra (24) and Ashfaq Wagher (26), all residents of Karachi. Drug addiction is a national problem and can directly affect the nation’s internal security, the judgement stated. In a major case related to a terror conspiracy, an NIA/ATS Special Court in Lucknow has sentenced three terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda to life imprisonment, news agency reported. The convicts – Minhaj, Masruddin, and Tauheed – were associated with the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind module. According to the case details, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested Minhaj from the Dubagga area. Based on his disclosure on July 11, 2021, Masruddin and Tauheed were also subsequently apprehended on the same day.  Officers probing the case highlighted that a cooker bomb was recovered from Minhaj`s residence, while explosive materials and a pistol were seized from the other accused, ANI reported. The case pertains to the killing of businessman-politician Ramavatar Jaggi in Raipur at a time when Ajit Jogi was the sitting Chief Minister of the State. In 2007, 28 people were convicted in the case by a trial court, but Amit Jogi was acquitted as he was given the benefit of the doubt. The High Court in its order said that the evidence made it amply clear that Amit Jogi was the mastermind of the entire conspiracy and he was also having the commanding position being the son of the then Chief Minister. Ramakrishnan was an astrologer from Managiri in Sivaganga district. In November 2021, a woman who consulted him mentioned that her two daughters, aged 17 and 14, were not performing well in their studies. Ramakrishnan claimed that performing a remedy would help the girls study better. Believing him, the woman took her daughters to his house. He then asked the mother to stay in one room and took the girls to another under the pretext of performing the ritual. He sexually assaulted the minors and threatened that their parents would die if they reported the incident. Out of fear, the girls did not disclose it at the time. Two years later, both girls fell ill. Hospital tests revealed that they had contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
