In Sant Kabir Nagar, two women died after being struck by lightning in separate villages. In Kushinagar, a 14-year-old was killed on a farm. Heavy monsoon rains continuing for the past 36 hours have wreaked havoc in many parts of Himachal’s Sirmaur district, prompting the Paonta administration to declare a holiday on Friday for educational institutions. As per official information, landslides have occurred at several places in the rural areas of the district, but no loss of life has been reported so far, except the death of one ox which slipped into a deep gorge near Shillai late Thursday evening. Sirmaur’s main rivers, Tons, Yamuna, Bata, Giri and Markanda, and dozens of streams are in spate. The administration has advised people to stay away from them. Continuing intense heat and rising electricity demand appear to be pushing the city’s ageing power infrastructure to its limits, with exclusive fire department data revealing that more than half of all fire emergencies reported this month so far were linked to electrical infrastructure failures. Transformers caught fire in many areas of Lucknow in the past few days. (For Representation) Data accessed from the Lucknow fire department shows that between May 1 and May 22, the city recorded 314 fire incidents. Of them, 158 cases (over 50%) were linked directly or indirectly to transformers, electric poles, overhead wires and air-conditioners. Electrical poles and overhead wire-related incidents formed the biggest chunk with 115 cases, followed by 39 transformer fires. Four incidents were linked to air-conditioners catching fire amid continuous usage during peak summer. Maharashtra: Four youths drown in two separate incidents near Vaitarna dam

Four youths drowned in two separate incidents near the Vaitarna dam in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, police said on Monday. According to police, four students from a local college entered the water at Zarwad Bet (an island) in the Vaitarna dam area on Sunday.  Two of them, identified as Aditya Pramod Vanare (20) and Veerendra Nandan Patil (20), drowned, and their bodies were fished out on Monday. Vanare was a resident of Buldhana district, while Patil hailed from Jalgaon, an official from Ghoti police station said. In another incident, two Nashik residents,  Atharva Sunil Gosavi (21) and Manish Dilip Chavan (21), drowned at the Dugarwadi waterfall near the dam on Sunday evening, he said. Rescue operations were launched immediately but were halted at night due to poor visibility. The bodies were retrieved on Monday, the official added.
