Parmjeet, Sakina fail to win medal

Indian para powerlifters kicked off their Paralympic campaign in Paris, but it was not a good outing for them. On Wednesday, Parmjeet Kumar and Sakina Khatun finished in 8th and 7th position, respectively. Paramjeet Kaur could only manage a lift of 150 Kg on his first attempt and then had two consecutive failed attempts at 157 and 161 Kg lifts in the men’s up to 49 Kg final. He will not be happy with his performance as his lift was way below his personal best of 166 Kg, which he lifted earlier this year at the Para Powerlifting World Cup. Last year, Parmjeet became the first powerlifter from India to win a medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships and qualify for the Paralympic Games. Later in the day, Sakina Khatun also failed to impress and finished in 7th place in the final of women’s up to 45 kg category, with just one successful lift of 86 kg on her first attempt. This was Sakina’s second consecutive appearance at the Paralympics after Tokyo 2021, where …

8 medals in one day at Paris 2024: From Nitesh to Sumit, how India’s most successful day ever at the Paralympics panned out | Sport-others News

Before Tokyo Paralympics, the most medals India had won at a single edition was four, which had happened twice. First, at the 1984 edition, then once more four in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Then came the surge in Tokyo three years back. On August 30 in Tokyo alone, India won five medals, back then a record. One of those five was a gold medal for Sumit Antil in men’s javelin. Fast forward three years, on the day Sumit defended his gold medal in Paris, India won a total of eight medals as September 2, 2024 became the country’s single most successful day in the history of Paralympics. Javelin to shooting, India targets medal surge as Paralympic Games start | Sport-others News

At Rio 2016, India’s para Olympians returned home with four medals, two more than the able-bodied athletes. The tally jumped to 19 medals at the next Summer Games at Tokyo in 2021. As the 2024 Paralympic Games gets underway with the opening ceremony in Paris on Wednesday, India will be looking to continue this upward trajectory. Hopes are high as the largest-ever para-contingent of 84 athletes will be seen at venues where India got five medals earlier this month. Double paralympic medalist Devendra Jhajharia, who is now president of the Paralympic Committee of India, has a number in mind when he speculates on India’s medal count. “Our 84-member team has come here with great enthusiasm. As the president of the Paralympic Committee, I want to tell you that we are going to create history in this tournament,” Jhajharia said in a video message after the contingent reached the Games village. “We will win more medals than we ever have in the history of the Paralympics. When we repeatedly say that we will win more than …
