Why India’s Test record is dipping at home? Former India head coach Rahul Dravid explains

Why India’s Test record is dipping at home? Former India head coach Rahul Dravid explains

India are on the top of the ICC men’s T20I rankings, dominating the world stage heading into the T20 World Cup title defence at home in under 10 days. Gautam Gambhir’s men are on a roll in the format, having not tasted defeat in any series since he took over from Rahul Dravid as head coach, post June 2024. However, India’s Test team has experienced a drastic slide in quality, with their home fortress being breached twice in under a year by New Zealand and South Africa. India are yet to win a Test series against a top-ranked nation under Gambhir, with their solitary series win coming over the West Indies at home in October 2025. Having led India to the 2023 World Test Championship final, Dravid opened up on the challenge for India’s long-format batters who also consistently switch across for ODI and T20I commitments. Speaking at a book launch event in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Dravid opened up on the challenge of allotting preparatory time for India’s all-format batters, a concern than Test skipper …

‘I tell myself I’m not that important’: KL Rahul opens up on retirement and injury battles | Cricket News

‘I tell myself I’m not that important’: KL Rahul opens up on retirement and injury battles | Cricket News

Despite bursting onto the international scene through a probing initiation in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 12 years ago, KL Rahul’s record across formats remains largely unfulfilled, given his innate batting abilities. The Karnataka batter, however, has found a fresh lease of life in a stable role in the ODI middle-order, emerging as one of the most solid No. 5 batters in 50-overs cricket ever since the last World Cup year in 2023. Rahul is the only No. 5 batter in the world to possess a 60-plus average and a near 100-plus strike rate in the format in the period since. At 33, the right-handed wicket-keeper is just ripening in ODIs, while his T20I career seems all but over after having played for India in 2022. Rahul remains India’s first-choice Test opener, but his 35.86 average belies his potential. Rahul has not shied away from speaking about his international cricket and is detached enough from his national kit to admit that he can walk freely when the time arrives. “I don’t think it’s [retirement] gonna …

Pakistan minister heading Asian cricket body, BCCI set to pull out from Asia Cup | Cricket News

Following the recent escalation in India-Pakistan hostilities, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to stay away from all Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events for now. The BCCI has informed the ACC about its decision to withdraw from the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka next month and from the biennial Men’s Asia Cup in September, The Indian Express has learnt. The ACC is currently headed by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. Story continues below this ad Sources said the decision is part of a move to isolate Pakistan cricket. “The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose chief is a Pakistan minister. That’s the sentiment of the nation. We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events too is on hold. We are in constant touch with the Indian government,” said a BCCI source. The BCCI’s position …

‘Karun Nair can be Virat Kohli’s replacement at No. 4 in England Tests’: Anil Kumble | Cricket News

As India moves into a hard transition following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, former India captain Anil Kumble feels Karun Nair could be one of the gainers when the Test team for England is announced. Furthermore, a question over India’s next No. 4 lingers as the position sees uncertainy for the first time in over three decades after being dominated by Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar before him. India are staring at a steep challenge with the five-match Test tour starting next month and an inexperienced middle-order at their disposal. Kumble feels the 33-year-old Nair can be the immediate solution for the Test side, also bringing his experience to replace Kohli at No. 4. “I don’t think anybody thought through who’s gonna bat at No.4. Rohit (Sharma) in Australia didn’t play the first Test, so there was a change in the batting order. Once (KL) Rahul did well, Rohit dropped down the order and then he dropped himself from the XI in that last Test. So you sort of know who is the …

Ashwin backs Jasprit for Test leadership role after Rohit-Kohli retirement

Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin feels the Indian team is in for testing times ahead after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket in a span of one week. Speaking on the latest episode of Ash ki baat on YouTube, he said, “We were in the middle of the KKR–CSK game when Rohit announced his retirement, and then today, Virat as well. I’ve been hearing the news of Virat’s supposed retirement for the last two days, but they (BCCI) must’ve spoken with him as well; that’s a personal conversation I would obviously not bring out here.” “I had no idea that both of them would retire all of a sudden, as it would be testing times for the Indian cricket team,” he added. Story continues below this ad Ashwin also called for the new era under coach Gautam Gambhir. After taking over the coaching reins from Rahul Dravid, Gambhir had to endure a white-ball series loss in Sri Lanka, a whitewash against New Zealand in Test matches at home and a …

NUMBERS GAME: India have given 17 debuts in women’s ODIs since December 2023 – what does it mean in the lead up to a World Cup? | Cricket News

Playing for your country at the highest level is a dream every cricketer harbours, the feeling of making a debut is unmatched, but how many is too many? On Sunday in Colombo, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said something at the toss that has now become a regularity: there was a debutant in the playing XI for the Women’s ODI Tri-series final, with Madhya Pradesh pacer Kranti Goud getting her first international cap. It was the fourth different debutant for India just in this tri-series in Sri Lanka alone, continuing a trend we have seen over the past year or so. Picking India’s three-match ODI series against Australia that started on December 28, 2023, as a starting point, India have handed debuts to a whopping 17 players in the 23 matches they have played to date. From Saika Ishaque and Shreyanka Patil in that series to Kashvee Gautam, Sree Charani, Shuchi Upadhyay and Kranti Goud in the Tri-series in Colombo, the Indian selectors and management have been generous in fielding newcomers. While it could be seen …

Is death overs acceleration India’s relative ODI weakness? | Cricket News

India’s three-match ODI series against England could not have finished much better than a 3-0 whitewash this week. “I don’t see there was anything wrong with what we did in this series. There are certain things we are looking at (to improve),” said captain Rohit Sharma after the third ODI in Ahmedabad, where his team got what it wished for being put into bat. Batting first for the first time in the series, India racked up a sizable 356 in Ahmedabad. As they capped off a hefty 142-run victory, a slight problem patch may have reared its head for this incredibly star-studded batting pool during the slog overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Story continues below this ad With their Powerplay intent booming to unprecedented rates since 2023 on the back of Rohit’s blitzkriegs and adept accumulation becoming the forte of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer in the middle-overs, the death-overs (41-50) remains an integral phase for the innings construction fruition. Since the last World Cup year in 2023, India’s middle-overs (11-40) average …
