Eye on Junior Hockey World Cup, Sreejesh plots to blend Indian flair with tactical adaptability | Hockey News

As a player, PR Sreejesh never stopped smiling, and shouting instructions at his teammates on the field. Now as the junior India coach, he is as animated from the sidelines and remains fun-loving. But for the goalkeeping great, the challenge is to maintain a balance. “I am strict with them. This age of 18, 19 and 20 is very dangerous. They are like a monkey mind and keep jumping here and there,” Sreejesh chuckles. “Sometimes, they are not bothered about what is required and will focus more on shopping or going out rather than resting. So, when the session happens, I demand their best. They can come and ask me anything. I show them the fun side also but when it comes to hockey, I am serious.” Sreejesh was talking to The Indian Express on the sidelines of the centenary celebrations of Indian Hockey. Janneke Schopman stepped down from her role as the chief coach of Indian women’s hockey team on Friday just days after she spoke out about the treatment she had received from Hockey India. The Dutch coach’s explosive interview about Hockey India officials coupled with the Indian women’s team’s inability to qualify for the Paris Olympics meant that Schopman parting ways with the Indian team was inevitable. But she had barely featured for the women’s team since Schopman took over the reins of the Indian team from compatriot Sjoerd Marijne. India coach Janneke Schopman (Photo via Hockey India) Schopman revealed that after the Tokyo Olympics she had told Rampal that “it was time”. “Rani told me she played at the Tokyo Olympics injured. Days after Janneke Schopman spoke out about the treatment she had received from Hockey India, the Olympic gold medallist stepped down from her role as the chief coach of Indian women’s hockey team. The Indian Express had recently reported how Schopman had broken down as she recollected her rocky stint with the Indian women’s hockey team. She had said that India was ‘extremely difficult for a woman’. The first female to coach the Indian hockey team, who had been at the helm of the women’s team for two-and-a-half years, had claimed she felt ‘alone a lot in the last two years’, wasn’t ‘valued and respected’ by her employers Hockey India. She had also pointed out that the women’s team was receiving differential treatment as compared to the men’s hockey team. Indian women’s hockey team captain Savita Punia with teammate Bichu Devi Kharibam and head coach Janneke Schopman during a training session ahead of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 match against USA, at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Friday, Jan. …
