India added two more assured medals at the ITTF-ATTU Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships in Bangkok on Friday, with Syndrela Das and Divyanshi Bhowmick reaching the U-19 girls’ doubles final and Syndrela advancing to the singles semifinals. The Indian pair produced a spirited comeback to defeat China’s Yao Ruixuan and Jiang Yiyi 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6 in the doubles semifinals. After twice trailing by a game, Syndrela and Divyanshi held their nerve in the decider to book a place in the title clash against Japan’s Aoba Takahashi and Misuzu Takeya. The finalists had earlier assured themselves of a medal by overcoming Thailand’s Thasita Kanaphong and Pimmada Thongnak 11-6, 13-15, 11-9, 11-8 in the quarterfinals. Riding on gold medals for familiar names in Sift Kaur Samra, Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil and Vijayveer Sidhu, and a rising star in Suruchi Phogat, the Indian shooting team finished second in the year’s first ISSF World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina. With the help of the bronze picked up by the mixed team air pistol pair of Suruchi and Saurabh Chaudhary earlier in the day on Thursday, India’s tally of four gold, two silver and two bronze medals, put them just behind China, who finished on top of the standings with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals. The highlight of India’s performance were the golds picked up by Sift (50m rifle 3 positions (3P) women), Rudrankksh (10m air rifle men), Suruchi (10m air pistol women) and Vijayveer (25m rapid-fire pistol men). The first major milestone that India were expected to clear at the Paris Paralympics, was completed on Wednesday night. It took a while to get going, but following up on the historic 8-medal magnificent Monday, it was a 5-medal terrific Tuesday for the Indian contingent. And with those five medals, India ensured that Paris 2024 would be the most successful Paralympics campaign in their history. Tokyo 2020’s tally of 19 was surpassed, and with five days of the Games still left. In the space of half an hour past midnight the para athletics contingent won four medals, in a couple of disciplines that have regularly delivered podium finishes over the last three editions. In Tokyo, the 19 medals were split between Athletics (8), Shooting Sports (5), Badminton (4) and one each from Table Tennis and Archery.
