Security forces on Tuesday arrested five cadres of different banned underground outfits and recovered a cache of arms and explosives during search operations in the Indo-Myanmar border district of Manipur, officials said on Tuesday. The arrest was made along the stretch between Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district of Manipur. (Representative file photo) According to officials, security forces continued an intensified search operation and area domination in vulnerable areas of Manipur. As a part of intelligence-based combing, cordon and search operation is being carried out extensively to nab those involved in extortion and other criminal activities in the state. Assam Rifles jawan shoots self after injuring six colleagues in Manipur

GUWAHATI An Assam Rifles jawan shot himself after opening fire at and injuring six of his colleagues at a battalion of the paramilitary force deployed close to the India-Myanmar border in southern Manipur. The incident happened early on Wednesday. The condition of the injured personnel, evacuated to a military hospital, was reported to be stable. An Assam Rifles official said the jawan, a local from a nearby district, had returned from leave on January 20. Taking to X, the Manipur police said all the injured men were non-Manipuris. “In light of the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur, it is important to share the details of the incident transparently to dispel any potential rumours and avoid any speculation. At least 184 Myanmarese soldiers, who fled to Mirzorm amid intense clashes between Myanmar army and ethnic armed group, sent back to their country on Monday. According to officials, a Myanmar Air Force aircraft landed at the Lengpui airport in the afternoon to take back the soldiers. “184 Myanmar soldiers were taken back to Sittwe (Akyab) in two sorties. Before the departure of the Myanmarese soldiers, the Indian authorities have completed all necessary formalities”, the officials said in a statement. The officials also said that remaining 92 Myanmar soldiers would be airlifted on Tuesday. Centre To Fence Myanmar Border, End Free Movement Into India

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that India would fence the border along Myanmar in a bid to restrict free movement into India. The announcement comes amid a high number of Myanmar soldiers fleeing into India to escape ethnic clashes.  “India’s border with Myanmar to be protected like border with Bangladesh,” Amit Shah said at passing out parade of Assam Police commandos. Nearly 600 Myanmar Army soldiers have crossed into India in the last three months. They took refuge in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after their camps were captured by the Arakan Army (AA) militants – an ethnic armed group in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine – government sources said. Installing a fence along the border, India will scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between the two countries. India To Scrap Free Movement Regime On India-Myanmar Border: Report

Mizoram shares a 510-km-long porous border with Myanmar. (Representational) New Delhi: The Free Movement Regime (FMR), which allows people residing close to the India-Myanmar border to venture 16 km into each other’s territory without visa, will be ended soon, a senior government functionary said on Tuesday. The 1,643-km-long India-Myanmar border, which passes through Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, currently has FMR. It was implemented in 2018 as part of India’s Act East policy. Under the FMR, every member of the hill tribes, who is either a citizen of India or a citizen of Myanmar and who is resident of any area within 16 km on either side of border can cross over on production of a border pass with one year validity and can stay up to two weeks per visit. “We are going to end the FMR along the Indo-Myanmar border soon.
