Champions Trophy | Before Bumrah’s arrival, it was Shami who carried India’s attack all through, says Laxmipathy Balaji | Cricket News

Former India pacer Laxmipathy Balaji said Mohammed Shami is the right guy to lead India’s pace attack in the Champions Trophy in absence of injured Jasprit Bumrah. “Actually, he had out-bowled Bumrah in the 2019 (50-over World Cup) and in the last World Cup (2023). Bumrah is the champion bowler across formats,” Balaji told PTI. “But Shami has experience and, before Bumrah’s arrival, it was Shami who carried India’s attack all through. Story continues below this ad “I think it’s very important. If India has to do well, then Shami has to come good with the new ball. The kind of impact he can make in his first six overs with the new ball, it will play a crucial role for India. If he can make early inroads regularly that will give a huge booster to India,” he added. Balaji feels Shami’s effectiveness has …

Decision on Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for Champions Trophy to be taken on squad deadline day: Report – India TV

Image Source : GETTY Jasprit Bumrah. India are fretting over the availability of Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The Indian ace speedster is currently out of action due to a back issue he picked up during the Border-Gavaskar series that ended in early January.  Bumrah has not featured in the first two ODIs against England and was in the squad for the third ODI. However, when the BCCI added Varun Chakravarthy to the squad, Bumrah’s name went missing. He is also in the squad for the Champions Trophy but his availability will be subject to fitness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take the final decision on the speedster on February 11, the deadline for the final squad submission, ESPN Cricinfo reported. The report added that Bumrah has had a scan on his back at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The medical team, the selectors and the management will now coordinate before arriving at the final decision on Bumrah.  India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had opened …

Varun Chakaravarthy trains with ODI squad in Nagpur ahead of India vs England series | Cricket News

Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has been spotted training with India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, starting Thursday in Nagpur. While the BCCI has not officially updated on Chakaravarthy’s inclusion in the squad yet, the 33-year-old tweaker could be in line for his maiden ODI call-up and debut, shortly before the Champions Trophy due to begin in Dubai in two weeks. On Tuesday, Chakaravarthy was seen bowling for over an hour against the Indian batters during the training session at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha. Story continues below this ad Chakaravarthy was the pick of the Indian bowlers in the recent five-match T20I series that the hosts won over England by a 4-1 margin. The Tamil Nadu spinner bagged 14 wickets, including a five-for, the most by an Indian bowler in a bilateral T20I series. Despite playing only 23 List A 50-over games, Chakaravarthy has amassed 59 wickets at a 19.8 strike rate. Chakaravarthy was also the leading wicket-taker among spinners in the recently concluded domestic 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, snapping 18 …

‘Who will the selectors drop…’: Ashwin backs Varun Chakaravarthy to make cut for India’s Champions Trophy squad | Cricket News

‘Who will the selectors drop…’: Ashwin backs Varun Chakaravarthy to make cut for India’s Champions Trophy squad | Cricket News

Former India spinner R Ashwin has made a bold claim and gone head to back to in-form sensation Varun Chakaravarthy to bolt into the ODI set-up ahead of the Champions Trophy, starting later this month in Dubai. Chakaravarthy has been in the form of his life during the recent England T20I series, spinning a web around the visitors with 14 wickets, including a five-wicket haul. The 33-year-old broke his own record to set a new high for most wickets by an Indian in a T20I bilateral series as the hosts drubbed England 4-1 in the five-match series. The Tamil Nadu spinner’s international career was in the wilderness after a lacklustre debut stint during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and his senior statemate Ashwin has now backed him for a return through the 50-over format just in time for yet another ICC tournament in the country. Yet to make his ODI debut, Chakaravarthy has stacked up 59 wickets from only 23 List A appearances. Ashwin feels that India could make a change to …

India’s roadmap for Champions Trophy: Wasn’t Nitish Kumar Reddy a better back-up option than Yashasvi Jaiswal? | Cricket News

India’s roadmap for Champions Trophy: Wasn’t Nitish Kumar Reddy a better back-up option than Yashasvi Jaiswal? | Cricket News

India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are confident that they have picked a well-balanced team for the ICC Champions Trophy, which begins next month in Pakistan and Dubai. India have made a couple of changes from their core which helped them reach the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they won 10 games in a row before losing the final against Australia in Ahmedabad. However, the 15-member squad picked has raised more questions than answers. The selection calls look quite conservative, and there were also a few debatable decisions. Will Jaiswal be a tourist again? Given his recent form, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s selection makes total sense. The 23-year-old can break India’s all-right-handed top-six batting line-up. But the question is whether he will get a chance in the playing XI. During the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean, the youngster warmed the bench throughout as the team management opted to go with Virat Kohli as Sharma’s opening partner. In an ideal world, it should have been Jaiswal. In the …

Dinesh Karthik on Karun Nair: ‘Don’t think he’ll make it to the Champions Trophy squad’ | Cricket News

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik said he don’t think that in-form batter Karun Nair will make it into India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy to be played in Pakistan and the UAE. Without doubt, Karun Nair has given selectors a name to ponder over, as an unreal average of 752 can’t be brushed aside by merely citing a packed batting line-up. The 33-year-old is yet to get out in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. In eight matches, he has been dismissed only once and out of the seven innings he has batted, he has crossed 50 six times with an unbeaten 44 against Chhattisgarh in the opening game being his lowest score so far. Karun Nair broke the List A record for most consecutive runs between dismissals with his third successive Vijay Hazare Trophy century. (BCCI) “Karun Nair, it’s been unreal to see the form that you’ve been in. Even Mayank Agarwal has been in some really good form. But the beauty is, it’s coming at a stage when the Indian ODI setup is …

Arshdeep Singh: The wicket-taking bowler India need in Dubai for Champions Trophy | Cricket News

Last week, a couple of videos of Arshdeep Singh making the ball talk went viral on social media. After Australia humbled India within three days on a lively Sydney pitch, the County Championship shared a video of the left-armer Arshdeep Singh knocking over Essex’s Paul Walter with the commentators gushing: “Oh what a ball, that’s a beauty by Arshdeep Singh, top of off stumps, bails flying, and that swung back in as well. Wow, what a beauty!” A couple of days ago, BCCI domestic shared the highlights of Arshdeep’s new ball spell against Maharashtra in Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy. The left-arm seamer cut India hopeful Ruturaj Gaikwad in half, beating his outside edge, before knocking his off stumps. Arshdeep has made a habit of producing rippers like the Babar Azam’s wicket in his first-ever World Cup (2022) delivery for instance. In three years since making his debut in 2022, with 95 scalps to his name, he has become India’s leading wicket take in the T20Is. In the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, Arshdeep is the leading …
