Harmanpreet Kaur brings out her best once again against Australia

3 min readMumbaiUpdated: Jun 28, 2026 08:55 PM IST There are batters who pile on runs through a tournament. Then there is Harmanpreet Kaur, who has developed a different reputation over the years – saving her finest for the biggest occasion, especially when the opponent is Australia. It happened again at Lord’s on Sunday. After a T20 World Cup in which she had looked scratchy and shuffled around the batting order, Harmanpreet walked out with India’s semifinal hopes on the line. Australia, once again, stood in the way. And once again, she found another gear. Her 56 off 27 balls was more than just another half-century. It was a reminder that some players are defined not by how they start tournaments, but by how they respond when everything is on the line. This was not new. Less than a year ago, at the ODI World Cup in Navi Mumbai, Harmanpreet produced one of the innings of the tournament against the same opponents. Her 89 off 88 balls in the semifinal anchored India’s chase and helped …

T20 World Cup: Why India need a favour from Pakistan to stay alive in semifinals race after loss to Australia | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: Why India need a favour from Pakistan to stay alive in semifinals race after loss to Australia | Cricket News

After enduring a close loss to Australia, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian outfit will have to rely on arch-rivals Pakistan’s result against New Zealand to go further in the Women’s T20 World Cup. While India are still mathematically alive in their quest for the semifinal, they need Pakistan to defeat an in-form New Zealand outfit but there’s also a catch here. The Women in Blue need Pakistan to beat the Kiwis but not too heavily. With India’s net run rate (NRR) still above the BlackCaps, any sort of Pakistan win will eliminate White Ferns. For India’s NRR to remain above Pakistan these are the possible scenarios: if Pakistan are chasing 121, they must take at least 10.5 overs to do so. If Pakistan score 150, they must not win by more than 52 runs. On Sunday, India lost to defending champions Australia by nine runs in their last group match to find themselves in a difficult position to qualify for the semifinals of the women’s T20 World Cup. Chasing 152 for a win, India ended at …

India go down to Australia in must-win T20 World Cup 2024 clash, semifinal hopes all but over – India TV

Image Source : AP Indian cricket team. The Indian women’s cricket team went down to defending champions Australia in its must-win Group A clash in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday, October 13. Chasing a target of 152, the Women in Blue ended up being nine runs short of the target as they were restricted to 142/9. India fought hard in the run-chase but fell a little short with captain Harmanpreet Kaur keeping the team in the hunt. She remained unbeaten on 54 off 47 deliveries but could not take the team home. The Women in Blue needed 14 runs off the last over but Annabel Sutherland bowled a brilliant final over. Four wickets fell in the final over with Sutherland taking two, while the other two were run-outs. She gave only four runs in the over and closed out the game brilliantly. India made a strong start to the chase with Shafali Verma going big in the initial overs. She scored 20 off 13 balls but departed in trying to hit one too many. …

T20 World Cup: In Sharjah against Australia, Shafali Verma must look to get back to boundary-hitting best | Cricket News

Under the floodlights in Sharjah, a young Indian batter was making her mark as a fearless strokemaker. Length ball from Ayabonga Khaka – one of the best pacers in the world – was swatted over midwicket for four. Next ball, slightly fuller, the ball went flying over cover. Another full ball, a bit straighter, was whacked over midwicket. In the space of four deliveries, 16-year-old Shafali Verma hit three fours in the Women’s T20 Challenge in November 2020. Sure enough, her innings would come to an end in the same over as she kept going for the boundaries, but ended up getting caught at deep midwicket. But at 16, the world was witnessing the start of something special from the swashbuckling Haryana batter. Fast forward four years, Shafali will be back in Sharjah in a match with much higher stakes. A match that will decide India’s future at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. India will be desperately hoping their match-winner comes good at the top of the order, if they are to stand any …
