India suffers a heavy defeat against Syria

India suffers a heavy defeat against Syria

The India U20 men’s team lost 1-6 to Syria in the first match of the Mandiri U20 Challenge Series at the Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, on Friday. Hosts Indonesia and Jordan, who will meet later on Friday, are the other teams in the four-nation friendly tournament. India will face Jordan in their second match on January 27. Lining up with nine under-17 players, India struggled to match the speed and physicality of the more experienced Syrian side, who had 2005-born players on the pitch and are preparing for the AFC U20 Asian Cup at full swing. For Biby Thomas’ side, Manbhakupar Malngiang scored the lone consolation goal in the 64th minute, a well-crafted goal that the Blue Colts can take heart from. Anas Hussam Dahhan opened the scoring in the fourth minute by drilling a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. Majd Manaf Ramadan made it two in the 15th minute as he twisted and turned in the box before unleashing a fierce strike straight into the top corner. India created a few …

Syria breach Blue Tigers’ den to take home Intercontinental Cup

Syria were crowned the Intercontinental Cup 2024 champions after beating India 3-0 at the GMC Balayogi Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. India spent the entire game on the chase after Mahmoud Al-Aswad scored the opener in the seventh minute. The hosts improved significantly in the second half, but a strong performance from Syrian goalkeeper Elias Hadaya prevented any sort of an Indian comeback. Finally, Daleho Irandust and Pablo Sabbag punished India on the counter and scored two more to seal a solid win for the West Asians. India head coach Manolo Márquez made seven changes, from the line-up which was held 0-0 by Mauritius. Did Liston’s ‘goal’ cross the goal line?

The Intercontinental Cup match between India and Syria ended in a bitter 3-0 defeat for India, with the Syrians dominating the proceedings right from the get-go. In what was Manolo Marquez’s second game in charge of the Blue Tigers, team India missed out on a chance of winning a trophy as they could not find an answer to the Syrian onslaught. After a thoroughly dominating first half where they led 1-0, Syria were put on the back foot by India on a few occasions in the second half but the game was killed off by the second goal from Syria. Although India kept trying, it was just not meant to be. In the last minutes of the game, Liston Colaco let a powerful shot from a distance and the Syrian goalkeeper made a mess of it, but it seems the ball did not fully cross the goal line. Despite Liston’s celebration and subsequent appeal, the goal was not given and play resumed. Although goal line technology was not available, the officials seem to have made …

Igor Stimac to Receive Over Rs 3 Crore as Compensation from AIFF

Former Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac is set to receive approximately Rs 3.36 crore (USD 400,000) as compensation from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) following the termination of his contract in June. The settlement comes after a dispute over unpaid dues that saw Stimac threaten legal action. Stimac’s contract, originally set to expire in June 2025, was terminated after India’s exit from the second round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, despite facing a relatively easy group. His sacking led to a war of words between Stimac and the AIFF, with the Croatian coach demanding compensation within 10 days. Stimac initially sought USD 920,000 (approximately Rs 7.72 crore) for two years of salary, but the parties eventually reached a compromise. “The AIFF has approved a payment of USD 400,000 to settle the issue,” a source revealed. This amount is considered significant for the AIFF, which has been facing financial challenges and has reduced its budget for competitions this year. Stimac had rejected previous offers of three months’ salary, and later five and …

‘Prefer to play a good game than to win the tournament,’ Manolo Marquez

India and Syria will go head-to-head for the Intercontinental Cup 2024 trophy in the third and final game of the tournament at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 19:30 IST. The match will be telecast on Sports 18 3 and streamed live on JioCinema. India, who began the competition with a 0-0 draw against Mauritius on Tuesday, are eyeing their second consecutive Intercontinental Cup, and third overall. Syria beat Mauritius 2-0 on Friday, which means they hold a slight advantage heading into the final game as the Eagles of Qasioun require only a draw to claim the trophy. Syria have a long history of playing tournaments in India, but the title has always evaded them. The West Asians lost back-to-back Nehru Cup finals to India in 2007 and 2009 before finishing fourth in 2012. In their last trip to India in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup, Syria ended in third place. But for the Blue Tigers to deny them a first silverware on Indian soil, they will need to …

Quality between Syrian and Indian players was the difference: Igor Stimac

After India’s lacklustre performance at the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar where the Blue Tigers made a group stage exit following its defeat to Syria in the final match, coach Igor Stimac pointed out the gap in quality between the two sides. Syria defeated India 1-0 in a winner-takes-all match to advance to the Round of 16 at the continental championship along with Australia and Uzbekistan, the two other teams of the group. Syria won the match in regulation time after Omar Khribin scored a 76th-minute goal defying two Indian players inside the box. Talking about the match, Stimac said, “The quality between Syrian and Indian players was the difference. Because the No. 7 (Khrbin) who came on the pitch (in the second half), his market value is double the market value of my 11 players.” Khribin, who plied in his trade in the Middle East all through his career, rattled the Indian defence after being introduced in the second half with his clever runs and brilliant sense of positioning. I understand the fans’ frustration …

AFC Asian Cup: India finish pointless, goalless but coach Igor Stimac says ‘we can compete at this level’ | Football News

Three games, over 270 minutes of football, six goals conceded, none scored and no points earned – India’s campaign at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup came to an underwhelming end on Tuesday with the team succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Syria at the Al Bayt Stadium in Doha. The final 10 minutes of the game were a sight to behold – eerily similar to how the curtain came crashing down for the men’s football team at the Asian Games. It was a group of 11 chasing, harrying and finally winning the ball, only to have every good idea come to naught with no final ball and an end product. The lack of options when presented with the ball and helplessness at the continental level has been a resounding theme around the two teams Igor Stimac has taken to the two big assignments at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. Against Syria on Tuesday, the Indian team played to the script. They fought to the best of their abilities. They created a …

India loses final group game to Syria, ousted from tournament

India’s campaign in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 came to an end when they went down to Syria 0-1 in their third and concluding Group B match on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. In another match in the same group played simultaneously, Australia and Uzbekistan remained locked in a 1-1 draw. While Australia finished on top with seven points, Uzbekistan and Syria are placed second and third with five and four points, respectively, India ended at the bottom of the table without a point. The top three teams in the group have qualified for the next round. In a passionately contested encounter at the retractable Al Bayt Stadium, India’s spirited resistance was finally broken in the 76th minute, with substitute Omar Khrbin slotting the ball home past a diving Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who till then looked unbeatable under the bar. The tall and experienced custodian was being stretched too much throughout the tie; he made innumerable saves only to find himself a trifle late in reacting to Khrbin’s low drive from close range. Repeated Syrian onslaughts …

India’s FIFA Ranking plummets to 117 after disastrous AFC Asian Cup campaign

In the aftermath of an abysmal AFC Asian Cup campaign in Qatar, India finds itself grappling with a plummet in FIFA rankings, now standing at a disappointing 117. The Blue Tigers concluded their tournament with an unprecedented record of zero points, zero goals, and zero wins, marking it as one of the worst campaigns in their history. The low point came after three defeats in the Asian Cup, underscoring the drastic decline as they now sit almost 20 ranks below that position. The journey in Qatar began with a glimmer of hope as India displayed a strong first-half performance against Australia. However, the optimism quickly evaporated as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat with no response. The second match against Uzbekistan …
