IOA president PT Usha accuses sports ministry of undermining sports governance

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha accused the sports ministry of interfering in the affairs of national federations in a strongly worded letter. Usha said the ministry has “undermined the credibility of sports governance”. With the ministry at loggerheads with the IOA for recognising the Indian Golf Union (IGU) elections won by the Harish Kumar Shetty-led faction, Usha said sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya is not being “properly apprised” of various important issues concerning national federations, including the contentious IGU polls. In a letter dated January 2 and signed by the undersecretary, the ministry said the IOA’s act of according recognition to Shetty’s faction can “create avoidable duplication and confusion” which may not withstand legal scrutiny. In her response, Usha said, “The manner in which this letter has been issued appears procedurally incorrect and reflects a lack of verification of the facts on record and a complete non application of mind by the Under Secretary.” “Sir, since I have assumed office in the lOA, it has become more and more apparent that the staff of …

Sports Ministry questions IOA’s decision on Indian Golf Union elections

The Sports Ministry has expressed concerns over the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) decision to recognize the Indian Golf Union (IGU) elections conducted by the Harish Kumar Shetty-led faction. The ministry stated that the move could create unnecessary confusion and may not withstand legal scrutiny. On December 30, the IOA issued a letter recognizing Shetty’s election while declaring the rival faction led by Brijinder Singh invalid. The IOA, led by President PT Usha, claimed it had reviewed the matter and found procedural compliance before making the decision. However, the Sports Ministry, in a letter dated January 2, advised the IOA to follow its constitution and the Olympic Charter while resolving the issue. The ministry highlighted that such decisions must adhere to the Sports Code and the IGU’s own rules. The IGU elections saw two separate Annual General Meetings (AGMs) on December 15. One faction, led by Singh, held its meeting at the India Habitat Centre under the supervision of Justice Rameshwar Malik. The other, led by Shetty, conducted elections at the Olympic Bhawan under Justice OP …

Two AGMs were held on December 15 to elect the new IGU office-bearers – one at the India Habitat Centre (IHC) where Singh was re-elected president with retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Rameshwar Malik, as the Returning Officer, …
