Once a fan of WWE superstar John Cena, Meenakshi Goyat is now in the Asian Championships final

5 min readUpdated: Apr 10, 2026 08:42 AM IST A 10-year-old Meenakshi Goyat ran around her house wearing a t-shirt with a picture of WWE superstar John Cena on it. Fifteen years on she has emerged as a star in the real thing. On Thursday, at the Asian Wrestling Championships, Meenakshi set up the title clash with Jin Zhang of China in the 53-kg category, an Olympic Games weight classification. The wrestler from Haryana blitzed past Sabkibjamal Esbosynova of Uzbekistan and Seoyoung Park of South Korea. When her father Prem Goyat came to know about her daughter’s obsession with professional wrestling, he started to figure out where she could go and learn wrestling. “She got obsessed with John Cena after watching WWE on TV. She used to say that I want to wrestle like Cena,” Prem tells the Indian Express. That professional wrestling was a different kettle of fish didn’t strike Prem then. He and his daughter went looking for wrestling academies. “I had no idea that Pro Wrestling is different from what I am …

‘If I join the BJP then I think all my bans will be lifted’: Bajrang Punia reacts to NADA suspension | Sport-others News

Olympic medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia who was suspended for 4 years by NADA due to his ‘refusal’ to provide sample for dope test, said on Wednesday that it wasn’t shocking and accused the government of being vindictive. “It is not shocking because this issue about trial has been going on for last one year. I have said in the past too that I have not refused to give sample to NADA. When they visited my home to conduct the dope test, they came with an expiry kit (in December, 2023). I have also posted this on social media,” he told reporters. “You can’t give expiry kit to any player and as far as I am concerned, my team was there, so they saw it. They came carrying expiry kits dated 2020, 2021, 2022. I gave my urine sample but then my team checked the kit and found out that it was expired. So we made a video of the kit and we mailed NADA, called them to inform about the mistake. But they did not …

New Olympic cycle, new face: Chirag Chikkara started wrestling to shed kilos, he is now under-23 world champion | Sport-others News

It wasn’t the love for wrestling — however inherent it is among the Haryanvis — that drew Chirag Chikkara to an akhara. His reason was a bit rudimentary: to shed a few kilos. He was, what they euphemistically call around these parts, a ‘healthy’ child. “So, we thought wrestling would be a nice exercise,” his uncle Virender says. As the new Olympic cycle begins, the now 18-year-old who only wanted to lose the baby fat was on Sunday night crowned the under-23 world champion, only the third Indian to achieve the feat after Aman Sehrawat and Reetika Hooda. In doing so, he has also emerged as a contender in one of India’s most fiercely contested weight categories, 57 kg. He also announced himself as a fresh hope to continue India’s tradition in the class where his state-mates have won medals at the last two Games. Ravi Dahiya, the Tokyo silver medallist who missed the Paris Olympics, is expected to move up the weight categories to 65 kg as the Los Angeles Games cycle begins. The …

Google Doodle celebrates wrestler Hamida Banu, who is she?

Search engine Google released a new doodle on May 4 to celebrate India’s first women’s wrestler Hamida Banu. The doodle stated: “Hamida Banu was a trailblazer of her time, and her fearlessness is remembered throughout India and across the world. Outside of her sporting accomplishments, she will always be celebrated for staying true to herself.” A trailblazer of Indian women’s wrestling, Banu wrestled during the 1940s and 1950s and won over 300 bouts, revolting against the notion that wrestling was predominantly a male sport. In 1954, she famously fought a bout against Baba Pehlwan in a unisex battle and won in one minute and 34 seconds. The defeat would force Baba Pehlwan to retire from wrestling. Google Doodle of Banu has been illustrated by Bengaluru-based artist Divya Negi. The doodle depicted a celebrating Banu, with local flora and fauna in the backdrop suggesting the sport’s rural background. ‘Merry me, if you can’ Known as the ‘Amazon of Aligarh’, Banu was born into a wrestling-loving family in the early 1900s in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh. Why Banu …

Deepak Punia, Sujeet stuck in Dubai Airport hours before their bout

Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalkal are stuck at the Dubai airport amid the ongoing flood situation in UAE and are in a race against time to make it to the Asian Wrestling qualifiers in Bishkek. The unprecedented situation has put the duo and their chances of making it on time for the weigh-in at the tournament into jeopardy. As per the latest post of Sports Authority of India, the wrestlers will be accommodated on the late-night flight to Bishkek. However, the situation doesn’t look easy at all as the wrestlers are just hours away from weigh-in. “Both wrestlers are practicing at the airport at the moment as they don’t have any option. All the hotels in Dubai are full and they are stuck there for hours,” a coach who didn’t wish to be named to The Bridge. When asked about the implications of this delay, the coach explained, “They were supposed to cut down their weight today before the tournament but now they are sleeping on the floor in the terminal and practicing …
