Once champions of indie films, OTT giants are now acquiring them for as less as Rs 30 lakh | Bollywood News

When streaming entered in India 10 years ago, it brought along with it promise. The promise of discovering new talent, both behind and in front of the camera. The promise of character development — letting the characters unravel over multiple hours of storytelling instead of condensing their arcs to two or three hours. Then there was also the promise of telling stories that otherwise rarely make it to the big screen — of an India less explored, about Indians less known, and brought to fruition by talent that’s considered too offbeat to co-exist with the mainstream. A couple of years into Indian programming, Netflix came up with Ivan Ayr’s cop drama Soni — a lived-in account of two women cops in Delhi. In many ways, it served as a palate-cleanser for Richie Mehta’s International Emmy Award-winning drama Delhi Crime, which released a couple of months later. The following year, Netflix backed Sooni Taraporewala’s film Yeh Ballet, another heartwarming indie that probably wouldn’t have found a home in the absence of the streaming platform. Even when …

The ‘pind’ indie | Entertainment News

Not very often, at the Cannes holy grail, does cinema generate as much social media buzz as Schiaparelli gowns. Rarely does a Punjabi film do so. Singh’s Rehmat, inspired by short stories of celebrated author Ajeet Cour, is a hyper-connected narrative set in a village. A film written and directed by Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) student Mehar Malhotra, Parchave Masya Raatan De (Shadows of the Moonless Nights), a Punjabi-language short film about claustrophobia and chronic wakefulness inside a cramped Mumbai flat, was this year’s Indian toast there. Punjabi films appear to be globetrotting because, just about a week later, on May 30, another Punjabi-language film, this one set in rural Punjab, quietly claimed the spotlight at the Angelika Film Center in East Village, New York, at the New York Indian Film Festival as the annual festival’s “centrepiece film”. Chandigarh-based Anmol Sidhu, 32, writer and director of Kikkaran De Phull (Flowers of Acacia), channels the existential crises of rural Punjab’s orchestra dancers who perform at weddings. This is his fifth film. Sidhu’s most …

Hence the CONNECT.” Obsession stars Michael Johnston as Bear, a music store employee who buys a supernatural toy that grants him his wish for his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) to fall in love with him, resulting in horrifying consequences. Nukkad Naatak makers decode ‘How to Enter Bollywood’ despite Rs 70 lakh hidden costs to release an indie film | Bollywood News

Tanmaya Shekhar’s directorial debut Nukkad Naatak, now streaming on Netflix India, underlines two virtues — patience and grassroots work. That’s exactly what it took him, his producing partner and lead actor Molshri, and their team to get their film released even though it was lying ready for months. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, they open up on getting their indie to theatres despite lack of access and relying on their viral Instagram campaign ‘How To Enter Bollywood’ and a pan-India caravan tour for marketing. Your film remained unreleased for one and a half years after it was complete. A lot of indie films, like Stolen and Dug Dug, assembled its Avengers — a host of big names from the film industry — to back the project as Executive Producers. Did you not try going for this model? Tanmaya: Yes, that’s the trend these days. We also wanted that, but we didn’t have any idea whatsoever about how to release a film or the business of it. It’s not like any potential presenter watched the film …

Richa Chadha questions why commercial actors are cast for indie films

Actor-producer Richa Chadha has questioned why independent filmmakers continue to cast “commercial” actors who, she says, bring neither box-office pull to stories that don’t need such faces nor festival credibility to benefit the indie film. “If an actor isn’t opening a film theatrically for you on a Friday and doesn’t add any real weight at festivals either, then what exactly is the advantage of casting them in an independent film?” Richa said in a statement.
