Indrani Mukerjea Can’t Travel Abroad, Supreme Court Says Complete Trial In 1 Year

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the plea of Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, challenging a Bombay High Court ruling that denied her permission to travel abroad. A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal directed the trial court to conduct the proceedings in the case within a year. Opposing the permission, the counsel for the CBI said this is a sensitive matter and trial has come halfway and 96 witnesses have been examined. The counsel appearing for Mukerjea, a former media executive, submitted that she has been given bail by the top court and there are 92 witnesses still to be examined in the matter. She said the trial court has been vacant for the last four months and the proceedings may take a long time to conclude. The travel restriction matter came up in the Supreme Court after a special court on July 19 allowed Ms Mukerjea’s plea to visit Spain and the United Kingdom for 10 days over the next three months. At present, Mukerjea is out on bail granted by the top court in May 2022. The Bombay High Court on Friday allowed a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging a special court’s permission to former media executive Indrani Mukerjea to travel abroad. A single-judge bench of Justice Shyam C Chandak set aside the special court order. The judge clarified that if Mukerjea wished to perform in India the works that she intended to complete abroad, the statutory authorities shall extend necessary help to her. Justice Chandak added that he had not gone into the merits of the case and held that the special court order was ‘unreasonable’, ‘unsustainable’, and deserved to be quashed and set aside. The bench passed an order in the plea by the central agency challenging the July 19 special court order permitting Mukerjea, who is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012 and is currently out on bail, to travel abroad once for 10 days within the three months from the date of the said order. The impugned order is set aside,” the court said. A special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court had on July 19 allowed Mukerjea to travel once to Europe (Spain and UK) for ten days between intermittent periods over the next three months. Mukerjea had sought permission to travel abroad claiming that she needed to change certain bank-related documents and other ancillary work after her divorce with former media honcho Peter Mukerjea. Justice Chandak said that if Indrani Mukerjea wants to carry out the work from India then the statutory authority …
