2 min readAhmedabadMay 29, 2026 10:36 PM IST Gujarat Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia on Friday said that eight lion cubs have died of suspected Babesia parasitic infection in the Gir region and that reports of their samples, sent to Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center, are expected in three-four days. Modhwadia added that there has been no such suspected death of lions in the last two days. Modhwadia said, “Deaths of eight lion cubs have come to light. And whether the deaths have occurred owing to Babesia or for some other reason, its confirmation can be done only after getting the medical report.” Babesia, a parasitic disease, spreads through ticks and can cause weakness, coughing and nasal discharge in affected animals. The deaths of the big cat cubs due to suspected Babesia infection have been reported in the revenue areas outside the Gir sanctuary, particularly in Gir Gadhada of Gir Somnath and Babra Kot of Amreli districts, he said. Bird flu: 6,000 chickens culled, 1 km infection zone declared in Patna

Around 6,000 chickens were culled in Patna after the Animal Resource Department found the poultry birds infected with avian influenza.   Officials said the infected birds were found at the Poultry Research and Training Centre operated by Bihar Animal Sciences University in Kaushal Nagar, Chitkohra, near the airport area. Following laboratory confirmation, the Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department ordered immediate culling and burial of all chickens at the facility. The entire locality has since been sanitised, and residents have been advised to follow strict precautionary measures. On the instructions of the Patna District Magistrate, the movement of chickens and roosters into and out of the municipal limits has been completely banned. The district administration has declared a 1-kilometer radius around the affected poultry farm as an infection zone and a 9-kilometer radius as a surveillance zone. Entry of eggs, poultry birds and feed into these areas has been prohibited unless accompanied by proper sanitisation certification.
