Why Mumbai’s Urban Couples are Risking Parenthood by Delaying Critical Infertility Care

Why Mumbai’s Urban Couples are Risking Parenthood by Delaying Critical Infertility Care

2 min readMumbaiUpdated: Apr 9, 2026 11:55 AM IST Most couples seeking infertility treatment at a Mumbai government facility are from urban areas and tend to delay medical consultation for years, with ovulatory disorders emerging as a leading cause, according to a study conducted at Cama and Albless Hospital. Titled Study of Demographic and Clinical Profiles of Patients Attending an ART Centre in a Tertiary Care Government Hospital, the research was published on April 6, 2026 in the International Journal of Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Pharma Research. The study, authored by Dr Afifa Naushad, Dr Tushar Palve and Dr Rajashree Thatikonda, analysed 60 patients who attended the hospital’s Assisted Reproductive Technology centre between August and October 2025. The findings show that 96.6 percent of patients were from urban areas, indicating gaps in access and awareness among rural populations. Nearly half of the patients were in the 31 to 35 age group, with an average age of around 33, pointing to delayed childbearing and late entry into treatment. A key concern highlighted in the study is …

Govt. IVF services changing fertility landscape in Telangana; State-run hospitals log 190 infertility cases

IVF centres were inaugurated at Gandhi Hospital and the Modern Government Maternity Hospital (MGHM) Petlaburj in late 2024 with services ranging from infertility evaluation to assisted reproductive technologies.  | Photo Credit: File Photo After multiple failed infertility treatments at private hospitals, a 30-year-old woman from Alwal here has delivered a healthy baby girl following in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at government-run Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, highlighting the growing role of government healthcare institutions in providing advanced fertility services. The woman, married for seven years, approached the infertility outpatient department at Gandhi Hospital in February last year after several unsuccessful intrauterine insemination (IUI) attempts elsewhere. Following a detailed infertility work-up, doctors initiated medical ovulation induction. As there was no adequate response, she was taken up for IVF. She was monitored throughout the antenatal period and was admitted with preterm onset of labour, following which an emergency lower-segment caesarean section was performed on February 7. She delivered a female baby weighing 2 kilograms. The newborn was shifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for monitoring in view …

Supreme Court To Scrutinise Surrogacy Act’s Ban On Second Child For Couples With Secondary Infertility | India News

Last Updated:November 06, 2025, 05:16 IST Petitioners argue that the State cannot impose an artificial cap on family size, especially since India does not enforce a ‘one-child policy’ Secondary infertility—the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term after previously giving birth to at least one child—is at the heart of the petitioners’ grievance. File pic/PTI The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear a significant constitutional challenge to a provision of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021, which bars married couples facing secondary infertility from using surrogacy to have a second child. The central question before the bench is whether this legislative restriction amounts to an unconstitutional intrusion by the State on the fundamental right to reproductive choice and personal liberty of its citizens, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. The petition specifically targets Section 4(iii)(C)(II) of the 2021 Act. This section debars an intending couple from availing surrogacy if they have a surviving child, regardless of whether that child was born biologically, adopted, or through a previous surrogacy procedure. Secondary infertility—the …

Study Explains How Traffic Noise, Pollution Are Linked To Infertility

Roughly one in six people are affected by infertility worldwide and with more than half the world’s population now living in urban areas, researchers are interested in whether living in noisy and polluted cities could be to blame. A new study in Denmark has used nationwide data to explore infertility. It found long-term exposure to air pollution and traffic noise may be associated with higher infertility – but these factors affect men and women differently. What do pollution and noise do to the body? We know traffic pollution has undeniable impacts on the environment. Its negative effects on human health are also well established, with links to cancers and heart disease. Inhaled chemicals from polluted air may also travel to the reproductive tract via the blood. They can reduce fertility by either disrupting hormones or causing direct damage to eggs and sperm. The effects of traffic noise on health are less clear, but some research suggests this affects stress hormones, which could alter fertility. What did they look at? This new study was conducted in …

What Christian Traditions Say About IVF Treatments

The Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos should be considered children has forced Americans to grapple with a mess of complicated realities about law, infertility, medicine and politics. At the heart of the decision, there is also Christian theology. “Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God,” the court’s chief justice, Tom Parker, wrote in his opinion. Among conservative Christians, the belief that life begins at conception has been a driving force behind anti-abortion policies for years. Among the most ardent abortion opponents, that thinking has also led to uncompromising opposition to in vitro fertilization. “That is the fundamental premise of our entire movement,” said Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, which opposes abortion. IVF, she said, “is literally a business model built on disposable children and treating children as commodities.” But on the morality of IVF, there is a more noticeable divide between Catholics and Protestants. Catholic teaching expressly forbids it. Protestants tend to be more open, in part because there is no similar top-down authority structure …
