FCNR(B) scheme: Inflows cool after netting $10 billion | Business News

3 min readMumbaiJul 15, 2026 01:20 AM IST The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) special FCNR(B) deposit mobilisation scheme has helped banks garner close to $10 billion so far, but the pace of inflows has somewhat moderated after an initial surge. While collections had accelerated after the RBI clarified that banks could extend loans against FCNR(B) deposits, the momentum, which has since eased as rising funding costs have made further mobilisation less attractive, is expected to pick up in the coming months, banking officials said. Several obstacles have come up even as banks tried to increase deposits from overseas Indians. The most significant challenge is the 25–40 basis point increase in the cost of raising dollar funds and rise in bond yields in the US and Europe amid the continuing West Asia conflict following the RBI’s June 23 clarification, which enabled leveraged deposit formats. “There’s doubt whether the estimated $ 50-70 billion flow will materialise in the wake of tight conditions but flows will pick up when funding cost and bond yields come down,” said …

Equity market gets Rs 1,600 crore FPI inflows, down 99% from last year | Business News

THE YEAR 2024 saw a sharp slowdown in foreign portfolio investor (FPI) activity, with foreign investors pumping in just over Rs 1,600 crore on a net basis into the domestic equity market, a steep fall of 99 per cent from the robust inflows of Rs 1.71 lakh crore in the previous year. The significant shift can largely be attributed to concerns over the valuation of Indian stocks, below-expected domestic GDP growth in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, weak corporate earnings and higher US bond yields. According to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) data, FPIs injected Rs 1,656 crore on a net basis into the Indian equity market this year (until December 27). Foreign investors were majorly selling in the stock market while buying in the primary market. In contrast to equities, FPIs net bought Rs 1.12 lakh crore of domestic debt in 2024, up from Rs 68,663 crore in 2023. Inflows in the debt voluntary retention route (VRR) and fully accessible route (FAR) categories were Rs 13,782 crore and Rs 28,795 crore in …

Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) has written to mutual fund houses to take measures to protect the interest of investors of small and mid-cap schemes, which have seen heavy inflows in the recent past. Small and mid-cap funds have seen a surge in inflows from investors led by higher-than-expected performance of companies in these segments. Many analysts have raised concerns over the valuation of small and mid-cap stocks which poses risks for investors. “In the context of froth building up in the small and mid-cap segments of the market and the continuing flows in the small and mid-cap schemes of mutual funds, trustees, in consultation with the Unitholder Protection Committee of the AMCs (Asset Management Companies), shall ensure that a policy is put in place to protect the interest of all investors,” AMFI wrote to its members in a letter written on February 27.
