New Delhi, Two prominent civil society groups from Ladakh Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance on Friday claimed to have reached an ‘in-principle understanding’ with the Centre on providing constitutional safeguards to the Union Territory. The discussions took place during the sub-committee comprising top representatives from LAB and KDA and also from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The borrowing will be supported by a sovereign guarantee of the Government of India. The total estimated cost of the East-West Corridor project is Rs 5,801.05 crore. The proposal was discussed in a Screening Committee meeting chaired by the Department of Economic Affairs with participation from NITI Aayog, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and other concerned central ministries. The state cabinet has given in-principle approval to the plan. The new proposal comes after the earlier K-Rail (SilverLine) project was dropped due to technical objections raised by Indian Railways and public opposition in some areas. A formal letter will be sent to the Central Government expressing the state’s interest in the project. The Cabinet has also tasked the Transport Department to initiate necessary consultations for the same. This academic session onwards, students wishing to study at St Xavier’s College can apply for it through the Gujarat Common Admission Service (GCAS) – the portal launched by the state government in 2024 for admission to colleges affiliated with government universities. On Friday, the autonomous college in Ahmedabad affiliated to Gujarat University gave an in-principle approval to join the GCAS for admission to nearly 2,500 seats of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate programmes (PG) in the 2025-26 academic session. “We had certain apprehensions, including logistical difficulties, in joining GCAS unconditionally which we will submit to the university authorities in writing on Saturday. The university had promised to address these apprehensions and make a technical team available to look into the issues,” the principal of St Xavier’s College, Vinayak Jadav, told The Indian Express.
