₹397 crore transformer procurement scam: Madras High Court calls for DVAC inquiry report and minutes of tender committee meetings

The judges wanted DVAC to submit a status report for perusal during the next hearing. The Madras High Court on Thursday called for the minutes of the meetings of the tender committees which had cleared the government contracts for procuring thousands of distribution transformers during the tenure of former Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji between 2021 and 2023 when a reported loss of ₹397 crore had been caused to the public exchequer due to collusive bidding. First Division Bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan also ordered that a report of the preliminary inquiry being conducted by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) into the issue must be placed before the court on March 9, 2026. The directions were issued on a 2024 writ petition filed by anti corruption organisation Arappor Iyakkam. When Advocate General P.S. The Director of Health Services, K.J. Reena, has directed Bindu Sundar, gynaecologist and resident medical officer (RMO) at the Nedumangad taluk hospital, to go on forced leave after a newborn’s death on Tuesday sparked massive protests at the hospital, with the family alleging medical negligence and with various political outfits creating a ruckus at the hospital, demanding action against the doctor. Protests continued at the hospital on Wednesday too, with the family refusing to accept the body of the infant and staging a sit-in at the hospital. A statement issued by the office of Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday said that Dr. Sundar was being transferred to the Punalur taluk hospital. Ms. George said that a three-member team from SAT Hospital, including a gynaecologist, anaesthesiologist and a neonatologist, had been asked to conduct an immediate inquiry into the incident and to submit a report on Wednesday itself. The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted three weeks’ time to the Centre to place on record the status of the probe into the Ahmedabad air crash that claimed 260 lives.  A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing pleas, including one filed by the father of late Captain Sumeet Sabharwal — the Pilot-in-Command of Air India flight AI-171 that crashed June on 12, 2025 — seeking an independent, court-monitored investigation into the tragedy. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), submitted that the inquiry by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was in its final stages. “We are at the fag end of the enquiry, and the report will soon be prepared,” the Centre’s second-highest law officer told the apex court, adding that certain aircraft components had been sent to foreign jurisdictions for specialised testing. The State government has formed a team of four IPS officers, led by R. Hitendra, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), to conduct a preliminary inquiry in the case pertaining to videos purportedly showing the now suspended Director-General of Police K. Ramachandra Rao misbehaving with multiple women in his office.  The government was mulling over handing over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). However, a committee has now been formed to hold a preliminary inquiry. Based on this report, the next course of action will be decided. With the women in the video not coming forward to lodge any complaints, there is no scope for a criminal investigation and only an inquiry can be held, sources said.  The inquiry committee will have Chetan Singh Rathore, Inspector-General of Police (Northern Range), Kala Krishnaswamy, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Crimes), and C.B. Himachal doctors’ call off strike after CM Sukhu reopens inquiry into hospital brawl | Chandigarh News

Doctors at Shimla’s Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) called off their strike after Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu assured that the patient-physician brawl that led to the termination of services of a senior resident would be looked into again. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA), in a statement, said the indefinite strike, which entered its second day on Sunday, has been called off with immediate effect in the larger public interest. It said the government has assured them that the doctor’s termination could also be revoked. The termination of the services of Dr Raghav Narula earlier this week had led the resident doctors to announce an indefinite strike on Saturday, with medical services, barring emergency services, disrupted for the second day at a few places in the state. On Friday, resident doctors were on mass leave demanding the immediate reinstatement of Narula. The RDA, meanwhile, maintained that it is awaiting the revocation of the doctor’s termination following the inquiry report.
