Is India’s Maoist insurgency finally over?

Is India’s Maoist insurgency finally over?

Security personnel sit beside weapons surrendered by Maoist cadres in Dantewada, in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division, on March 31 | Photo Credit: AFP The story so far: On May 21, 2025, Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavraj, then general secretary of the banned CPI (Maoist), was killed in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Abujmarh area. The operation was led by the District Reserve Guard and the CRPF’s CoBRA unit. His successor, Thippiri Tirupati alias Devji, surrendered by February 2026 along with cadres and weapons. With most Central Committee leaders killed or arrested, the organisation is now largely leaderless. With these developments, can the five-decade-old Maoist movement be considered “finished,” as Home Minister Amit Shah has claimed, in line with his March 31 deadline to end the insurgency? In fact, more than 50 cadres, including State Committee Members, have laid down their arms since November last year,” said a senior police officer. Recently, deputy platoon commander Jagesh and party member Ratna were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Kandhamal. Cadres who have surrendered have also revealed details about the organisational weaknesses of the CPI (Maoist). Bandaa Singh Chaudhary review: Arshad Warsi’s unintentionally funny film on insurgency in Punjab that no one asked for | Bollywood

Bandaa Singh Chaudhary review: As I watched Bandaa Singh Chaudhary, I was transported back to the junior school plays we would put together for Independence or Republic Day. Themes as heavy as patriotism would be boiled down to the bare minimum. We were kids then who needed time to grasp it. Nostalgia isn’t always a good thing, though. Today, we have all grown up and out of that phase. The makers of this film are probably only halfway there. What is it about The story flashbacks to 1975, when Bandaa (played by Arshad Warsi) manages to pull in a girl he likes, Lalli (played by Meher Vij), purely by stalking her everywhere. …

A significant number of cadres are abandoning the Communist Party of India (Maoist)-led insurgency due to the intensified ground operations by security forces across Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. In the first four months of this year alone, around 240 insurgents have surrendered, a notable increase compared to previous years. Security forces attribute this surge to their enhanced operations and the shrinking operational area of the Maoists, particularly due to the establishment of camps in affected regions.
