‘Stars interfere with filmmaking process’: David Dhawan says he wanted to ‘get out of the rut of working with stars’

In the 90s, David Dhawan was one of the most sought-after and successful filmmakers in Hindi cinema. He gave some of the biggest comedy hits in the industry in that decade, carrying it forward to the 2000s as well. But after that came a period of lull, during which many of his films did not perform well at the box office. In a recent conversation, the veteran filmmaker said that the period forced him to opt out of working with stars and bank on newcomers. Supreme Court declines to interfere with forest clearances for Adani’s Madhya Pradesh coal block project

The Supreme Court on Thursday (May 21, 2026) declined to interfere with the environmental clearances granted to the Adani Group’s coal block project in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, pointing to the delay in challenging the approvals. A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe was hearing a plea filed by environmental activist Ajay Dubey challenging an April 22 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had dismissed his plea against the May 2025 environmental clearance granted to Mahan Energen Ltd., a subsidiary of Adani Power, on the ground of limitation. Questioning the delay, the Bench orally observed, “Your original application itself was filed on January 22… why was there such a delay?” Under Section 16 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, challenges to orders passed by statutory authorities must ordinarily be filed within 30 days, with a further 60-day extension permissible upon sufficient cause being shown. ‘Serious environmental issue’ Appearing for Mr. Dubey, advocate Siddharth Gupta contended that the matter involved grave environmental concerns and that technical objections ought not to stand …

‘How can we interfere…’: BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla on Sunrisers Leeds signing Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed | Cricket News

3 min readUpdated: Mar 13, 2026 02:33 PM IST The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) vice president Rajeev Shukla has said that it doesn’t have a say in Sunrisers Leeds acquiring Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed The Hundred auction. The acquisition came after speculation over whether The Hundred teams owned by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises will bid for Pakistani players or not, with the Leeds franchise being owned by Sun TV Network Limited, which also owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. “Our domain is limited to the IPL. We have nothing to do with what they do in a league outside that. How can we interfere with them signing a player in a foreign league. That’s upto them. It’s purely upto the franchise who have bough a team outside India. If they are taking some player outside India in that league, we are least concerned because, in IPL there is no such player,” Shukla told ANI on Friday. There had been reports earlier that the teams bought by IPL franchise owners would …

No good ground to interfere in Great Nicobar Holistic Development Project: NGT| India News

Adequate safeguards have been provided in the conditions for the environmental clearance (EC) to the Great Nicobar Holistic Development Project, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ruled on Monday, underlining that there is no good ground for it to interfere. The NGT said adequate safeguards have been provided. (HT PHOTO) The project involves an international container transshipment terminal, an international airport, a power plant, and a township over an area of 166.10 sq km, of which 130.75 sq km is forest and 84.10 sq km tribal land. “We find that adequate safeguards have been provided in the EC conditions and in the first round of litigation the Tribunal had refused to interfere in the EC and remaining issues noted by the Tribunal in the first round of litigation have been dealt with by the High-Powered Committee and considering the strategic importance of the Project and taking into account the other relevant considerations, we do not find any good ground to interfere,” said NGT’s Adarsh Kumar Goel-headed eastern bench. Environmentalist Ashish Kothari appealed against the environment and forest …

Won’t interfere with NIA probe in Bengal violence for now: SC| India News

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would not interfere at this stage with the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) probe into the recent violence at West Bengal’s Beldanga in Murshidabad district and that all objections raised by the state be examined by the Calcutta High Court, although it questioned the basis on which the agency invoked the stringent anti-terror law to justify taking over the case. Won’t interfere with NIA probe in Bengal violence for now: SC Disposing of the state’s petitions, the court said that it would be appropriate for the high court to independently assess the NIA’s decision to invoke Section 15 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA), which defines a “terrorist act”, after examining a status report to be submitted by the agency in a sealed cover. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi clarified that it has expressed no opinion on the merits and that both sides would be at liberty to raise all contentions before the high court, where the matter remains …

When can courts interfere in an ongoing investigation? | Explained

For representative purposes. | Photo Credit: iStockphoto The story so far: The Supreme Court recently in State of U.P. & Anr versus Mohd Arshad Khan & Anr (December 2025) set aside the Allahabad High Court’s order and held that “directing a time-bound investigation must remain the exception rather than the norm”. The Court said that High Courts should intervene only “where delay itself begins to cause prejudice”. The Court also did not find any justification for granting protection from arrest (or coercive action) without granting the relief actually prayed for — quashing the First Information Report (FIR). Earlier in November 2025, the Delhi High Court in Satya Prakash Bagla versus State & Ors. held that the phrase “coercive measures” did not apply to freezing of bank accounts by the police during investigation. It said that the intent of the phrase “coercive measures” was not to restrain further investigation by the police, but was used in the context of only the petitioner’s personal liberty. When can courts interfere? A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court in …

Behind U-19 star Abhigyan Kundu’s rise: unorthodox coach who made him sleep at railway station and parents who didn’t interfere | Cricket News

When Abhigyan Kundu’s parents first walked into Chetan Jadhav’s cricket academy in Navi Mumbai, their request to the coach was very simple. Their son, they said, was too energetic. He ran endlessly inside the house, refused to sleep, and needed an outlet. If cricket could tire him out enough to ensure a good night’s rest, that would be enough. What they didn’t know then was that this restless energy would soon turn into an unrelenting addiction to cricket. And that they had found a coach with quirky methods that work. Jadhav’s lessons extended well beyond technique. Despite Abhigyan’s comfortable upbringing, the coach made him travel in unreserved train coaches, sleep at a railway station for a night, and share meals with players from far humbler backgrounds. “Cricket alone isn’t enough,” Jadhav explains. “He needs to learn about life.” Inside Jadhav’s office, Abhigyan’s journey is meticulously documented. Files filled with scorecards, printed records of every fifty and hundred, and over 6,000 GB of batting footage chronicle every session, every mistake, every correction. On Saturday, the Mumbai wicketkeeper-batsman …

SC refuses to interfere with HC order on Vijay’s movie, urges early disposal of case| India News

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere with a Madras High Court order staying a single judge’s direction to grant a “UA 16+” certificate to the Vijay-starrer Tamil film Jana Nayagan, observing that the matter was actively pending before a division bench of the high court. SC refuses to interfere with HC order on Vijay’s movie, urges early disposal of case While Vijay (the mononym by which actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar is popularly known) himself has not commented on it, both DMK leader and Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have said that the reasons for the delay in the certification are political. To be sure, Vijay has consistently attacked the DMK, while the local units of both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have made efforts to reach out to his fledgling political outfit. On Thursday, a bench of justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih noted that since the division bench of the high court had already seized of the dispute and listed it for hearing …

Last Updated:January 15, 2026, 14:57 IST The apex court asked authorities to preserve CCTV footage of the raids and also observed that there would be lawlessness if court does not intervene in the matter. File image of the Supreme Court | File Image. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Vipul Pancholi also asked authorities to preserve CCTV footage of events that happened during the raids. The bench also observed that there would be lawlessness if the top court did not intervene in the matter. The central agency moved to the top court after ED officials faced obstructions during the probe agency’s raids at the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC in Salt Lake and the residence of its chief, Pratik Jain, in Kolkata in connection with a coal smuggling case on January 8. The agency has claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee entered the premises and …

Orissa High Court refuses to interfere in petitions seeking reservation in medical super specialty posts

Orissa High Court. File. Photo: Special Arrangement. Orissa High Court has refused to interfere in the recruitment process of the Odisha Government, which did not earmark reservations for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe candidates for the selection of assistant professor in the super-speciality stream. Adjudicating petitions filed by two candidates belonging to reserved categories, Orissa High Court Judge Biraja Prasanna Satpathy said the court found no illegality in the advertisement issued by State government. Odisha Public Service Commission had come out with an advertisement in 2021 for recruitment of post of assistant professor (Super Speciality). The advertisement was challenged by two candidates on ground that no reservation was mentioned in it. “No reservation was provided for any of the candidates belonging to reserve category and all the 19 posts so advertised were meant for unreserved candidates, the process of selection so undertaken by the Commission is vitiated,” the petitioners argued. “Since in terms of the decision in the case of Indra Sawhney so followed in Preeti Srivastav and Faculty Association of AIIMS as cited (supra), …
