Umar Khalid seeks interim bail on humanitarian grounds

Jailed student activist Umar Khalid has moved the Delhi High Court, challenging a trial court order denying him interim bail in connection with the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. Khalid on Thursday sought interim bail on humanitarian grounds to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his late uncle and to take care of his ailing mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. As per the causelist published on the official website of the Delhi High Court, a bench of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Madhu Jain is scheduled to hear the matter on Friday. ED rejects interim bail plea by I-PAC co-founder Vinesh Chandel

A Delhi court on Tuesday denied interim bail to Vinesh Chandel, director and co-founder of Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), in connection with a money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate. I-PAC co-founder Vinesh Chandel were produced before the judge on April 14 after ED arrested him in West Bengal Coal case. Additional sessions judge Shefali Barnala Tandon of Patiala House Court rejected the plea, ruling that the request did not meet the threshold of “exceptional humanitarian grounds” necessary for granting interim bail. The court underlined that it was not insensitive to the medical vulnerability of elderly parents, but the material on record did not indicate any sudden or life-threatening emergency requiring the accused’s immediate presence. The court further observed that no evidence was presented to show that the mother’s medical needs could not be managed through hospitalisation, professional care, or assistance from other family members.
