India edges past Hong Kong in second friendly

The India U20 women’s national team registered their second consecutive win in the Pink Ladies U20 Youth Cup, beating Hong Kong 1-0 at the Emirhan Sports Centre in Manavgat, Türkiye, on Saturday. Winger Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam (53’) scored the only goal of the match, in the second half. The Young Tigresses had earlier defeated Jordan U20 2-1. Though the Pink Ladies Youth Cup is for U20 teams, India’s Saturday rivals, Hong Kong, were comprised of players above the cutoff age. Goalless First Half The Blue Tigresses began the match with a certain degree of control in the middle, as Cindy Remruatpuii Colney and Kajol D’Souza dictated the proceedings. The chances, however, were few and far between. India’s best chance of the half came in the 21st minute, when forward Lhingdeikim scampered into the Hong Kong box, cut past her marker, and pulled the trigger with her left foot. Her low shot was tipped onto the far post by Hong Kong goalkeeper Lee Yi Yan. With less than 10 minutes of the first half left, Pooja …

Bui Vi Hao put crowd favourites Vietnam in the lead in the 38th minute, but India pulled back through comeback man Farukh Choudhary’s 58th-minute goal. Goalkeeper and skipper Gurpreet Singh put up a stellar performance, which included a penalty kick save in the 27th minute. While Vietnam is ranked 116 in the FIFA table, India is 10 places behind them. ‘Vietnam has good home advantage,’ Gurpreet Sandu ahead of Vietnam test

The big goal for the Indian senior men’s team is to secure a historic third consecutive AFC Asian Cup qualification in 2027. The FIFA international windows in October (against Vietnam) and November (against Malaysia) under new head coach Manolo Márquez are being utilised as preparatory matches for the all-important qualifiers beginning in March 2025. However, results do matter in these games for a simple reason – FIFA ranking points, which would determine India’s pot allocation for December’s draw for the qualifiers. After a draw and a defeat in the Intercontinental Cup last month against Mauritius and Syria, respectively, the Blue Tigers have arrived in Nam Định desperate for victory in the friendly match against the hosts on October 12. Success eluded India the last time they travelled to the southeast nation. That was in September 2022 for the Hưng Thịnh Friendly Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City, where India finished runners-up after a 1-1 draw against Singapore and a 0-3 loss to a Vietnam side coached by Park Hang-seo. Ten players who have made the …
