Kerala’s Pariyathukavu residents hope government intervention will put an end to eviction threat

On a cloudy evening early in the third week of May, a police officer from the Special Branch of the Ernakulam police reached out to some residents of Pariyathukavu, a Dalit settlement close to Malayidamthuruth, around 10 km from Perumbavoor. He had an unpleasant message to deliver. “We need to implement the court order without fail. The court has given us the ultimatum,” he stoically told the anxious residents. He was referring to the execution of an eviction order which has been pending for a while. The developments have cast uncertainty over the future of seven families, all relatives, who live in the Pariyathukavu settlement, along the Periyar Valley Canal. Moderate houses with plastered walls and concrete roofs situated on either side of a sloppy mud lane, bordered with thick green bushes sporting crimson hibiscus flowers, make up the Pariyathukavu settlement. Most of the residents say they have been living in the settlement for decades. 14 eviction attempts Till now, the residents, backed by some political parties, had managed to avoid the execution of a …

Players divided as Indian Volleyball conducts fresh trials after FIVB intervention

Players divided as Indian Volleyball conducts fresh trials after FIVB intervention

Ahmedabad: Around 95 players from across the country flocked down to the SAI Training Centre at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex here last week as volleyball coach Dragan Mihailovic led an open trials to select the Indian team for the upcoming 2026 AVC Men’s Nations Cup and the 2026 Asian Games. A total of 28 players, including veterans like Jerome Charles Vinith and Ashwal Rai, were selected from the trials for the national camp. The list will further be trimmed by half following the camp, and the remaining 14 or 15 players will wear the India jersey in the continental competitions. The open trials were held in the backdrop of the ongoing tussle between the FIVB, Indian players, and the Volleyball Federation of India (AFI). The interim VFI body had already selected a 28-member contingent for the national camp in April from a list of 40 invited players from the national championships. But following FIVB’s decision to revoke its recognition just a month after granting it, the reinstated Steering Committee called for open trials. The …

Why it keeps failing, and Yogi Adityanath’s intervention

5 min readApr 22, 2026 05:06 PM IST First published on: Apr 22, 2026 at 05:05 PM IST For 30 years, India’s Women’s Reservation Bill has lived a frustrating half-life — conceived repeatedly, passed occasionally, and implemented never. On April 17, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which sought to operationalise the 33 per cent quota by 2029, fell 54 votes short of the two-thirds majority. In the ledger of missed chances, this was the seventh. The post-mortems have been predictable. The Opposition argued that tying reservation to a delimitation exercise would penalise southern states that had successfully controlled their population, and that women’s representation was being used as cover for a far larger redrawing of India’s political map. The government argued that without decoupling from a new Census, the 2023 Act would not take effect until 2034 at the earliest. Both sides have points. But beneath the technical quarrel lies an older, uglier truth that nobody wants to name: Most male MPs have never actually wanted this law to work. The evidence is on the …

Tummala Nageswara Rao | Photo Credit: SIDDHANT THAKUR Minister for Agriculture and Marketing Tummala Nageswara Rao urged the Union government to take steps to restore five Gram Panchayats (GPs) adjoining Bhadrachalam town to Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, stating that their merger with Andhra Pradesh was an ‘anomaly’. These villages were merged with Andhra Pradesh after the formation of Telangana. In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday, Mr. Nageswara Rao sought the restoration or re-transfer of Yatapaka, Kannaigudem, Pitchikalapadu, Purushothapatnam and Gundala Gram Panchayats, which together comprise 19 revenue villages stating that they remain geographically, functionally and administratively linked to Telangana. Urging the Centre to examine the matter holistically, he said Parliament should discuss this long-pending issue during a special session likely to be held this month to debate key legislative moves, including the Women’s Reservation Act and the proposed delimitation exercise. Supreme Court intervention clears Uttarakhand man’s negative CIBIL score| India News

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stepped in to resolve the grievance of a man whose credit score remained “negative” for years despite having no outstanding loan or default, prompting banks and Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited CIBIL to finally correct their records. Rajendra Singh Panwar’s battle began with a writ petition filed five years ago before the Uttarakhand High Court, where he sought directions to correct his credit records and redress the anomalies that had crept into his CIBIL profile. (Representative) This telling instance of how erroneous credit records can choke access to finance came up before a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan. The case arose from a petition filed by Rajendra Singh Panwar, a businessman and resident of Uttarakhand, who complained that an adverse CIBIL score had effectively locked him out of the financial system since 2020, even though he had no outstanding dues. Panwar’s plea, argued through senior counsel PS Patwalia, complained that despite not having “any loan and no default,” his credit profile continued to reflect a negative …
