The State Election Commission (SEC), Punjab, has told the Punjab and Haryana high court that the civic body polls in the state are being conducted through ballot papers as the Election Commission of India(ECI) failed to provide Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) as per schedule finalised by SEC. The court has deferred hearing for Wednesday and asked the SEC counsel to produce the letter in question. (HT) The information was submitted during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) by one Ruchita Garg, an advocate and Mohali resident, challenging Punjab SEC’s decision to hold the elections of municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats on May 26 by ballot paper instead of EVM. Appearing for the petitioner, senior advocates Chetan Mittal and Amit Jhanji had argued that the action of the state amounted to returning to a bygone era. But in South Korea, one such robot is now stepping into an entirely different role—that of a Buddhist monk. According to Reuters, a temple in Seoul recently introduced its first humanoid robot monk named Gabi ahead of Buddha’s birthday celebrations, sparking curiosity and debate online. About 130 centimetres tall and dressed in traditional Buddhist robes, Gabi took part in an ordination ceremony alongside senior monks at Jogye Temple. During the ritual, a monk asked the robot if it would commit itself to Buddhism. Gabi replied, “Yes, I will devote myself.” The humanoid was also seen bowing respectfully and holding its hands together in prayer, imitating traditional Buddhist customs. It proposes to amend the 2008 law enacted under the Shiromani Akali Dal–Bharatiya Janata Party government. A series of so-called sacrilege incidents in recent years prompted successive governments to pursue legislation. In 2016, the SAD-BJP government passed two amendment bills — The Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016, and The Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 — prescribing life imprisonment for desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, but the Centre returned them, asserting that all religions must be treated equally under India’s secular framework.
