New Delhi: The CBI has sent a judicial request to the United States seeking information from private investigator Michael Hershman, who had expressed willingness to share with Indian agencies crucial details about the Rs 64-crore Bofors bribery scandal of the 1980s, officials said Wednesday. Hershman, head of the Fairfax Group, visited India in 2017 to attend a conference of private detectives. During his stay, he appeared on various platforms, alleging that the investigation into the scam was derailed by the then Congress government and stated he was willing to share details with the CBI. He had claimed in an interview that he was appointed by the Union Finance Ministry in 1986 for investigation of violation of currency control laws and money laundering by Indians abroad and tracking of such assets outside India and some of them pertained to the Bofors deal. The Class XII student who allegedly shot dead the principal of his school in Madhya Pradesh`s Chhatarpur district is “remorseless” and appears to be a “psychopath”, an official connected to the probe claimed on Saturday. The 17-year-old boy shot principal of a government high school near the institution`s toilet at around 1:30 pm on Friday and had then escaped from the spot along with a classmate on the deceased`s scooter, police said. He died instantly and the alleged shooter was held from the district`s border with Uttar Pradesh some hours later. The firearm used in the crime was recovered from him. “The student is saying principal used to scold him so he shot him dead. He claimed the principal often chided him and told him not to indulge in `goondaism` in school. The teen accused appears to be a psychopath. (courtesy: balanvidya) Vidya Balan makes a rather unconventional crime investigator in Anu Menon’s Neeyat – a laconic, straight-faced, hawk-eyed woman who does not waste her breath until it is absolutely essential. She employs silence as a shield and a tool as she ferrets around the ornate interiors of an opulent Scottish seaside castle after its owner jumps off a cliff. That is about the only semblance of novelty that there is in the plot, which combines some genuinely clever twists with hackneyed hooks and contrived sleights to deliver a whodunnit that is only sporadically effective. The performances, too, are wildly uneven. While the likes of Neeraj Kabi, Shahana Goswami and Shashank Arora (in the role of a drug-addled drifter) do all that they can to raise the bar, not too many of the rest of the actors in the film are able to produce the sort of goods that could help the narrative offset its weaker stretches.
