WWDC 2026 roundup: Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, iOS 26 and more | Technology News

Apple kicked off WWDC 2026 by revealing the next generation of its software platforms, placing artificial intelligence (AI) at the centre of nearly every announcement.  The company introduced a significantly upgraded Siri, expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities, new safety features for children and teens, and fresh operating system updates that aim to make Apple’s devices smarter, more personal and more useful. While no major hardware products were announced during the keynote, Apple delivered one of its biggest software refreshes in recent years. The biggest announcement at WWDC 2026 was the introduction of a new Siri powered by advanced Apple Intelligence models. Apple says the new Siri is more natural, conversational and context-aware than previous versions. Instead of responding to isolated commands, Siri can now understand ongoing conversations and maintain context across multiple requests. For example, users can ask Siri about information in an email, then continue the conversation with follow-up questions without needing to repeat details. Siri can also understand what is happening on the screen and take actions based on what users are viewing. The …

The beta versions of the update introduced two significant new features: the ability to play video while the car is stationary and compatibility with third-party AI chatbot apps. While these updates may seem minor, they represent a significant enhancement of the driver’s and passengers’ capabilities through the display screen. A change in priorities? For a long time, …

How to help your parents with their tech over the holidays

How to help your parents with their tech over the holidays

It also comes with requests for tech support and questions like “Why does my computer do this?” and “I read about this AI — what is that?” Think of it as an opportunity rather than a burden. If you’re like many people, you get tech support calls from frustrated parents or grandparents all year long. This is your chance to make sure things are set up so that, when you do get that call in a month or two, you can more easily fix things — or help your parents fix it themselves. Signal’s secure message backups arrive on iOS

Signal’s secure message backups arrive on iOS

Signal is launching secure backups on iOS, allowing you to save and restore your messages in case you lose or break your phone. With the free version of the feature, you can store up to 100MB of text messages, along with the past 45 days’ worth of photos, videos, GIFs, and files. There’s also a $1.99 per month option that can back up all of your text messages, in addition to up to 100GB of media beyond the 45-day cap. Signal first launched secure backups on Android devices in September, which store your messages and media using end-to-end encryption. You can access your backup using a 64-character recovery key generated on your device, though Signal notes that it can’t help you recover the code if you lose it. To enable secure backups, head to the Settings menu and select Backups. From there, tap Setup > Enable Backups and then write down or store your recovery key. Once you confirm your recovery key, you can choose between the free or paid plan. Signal will then begin …

Apple will take a mini commission from mini app developers

Apple will take a mini commission from mini app developers

Apple is launching a new program for mini app developers that slashes its fees for in-app purchases. On Thursday, the company announced that mini app creators who join the program take advantage of a lower 15 percent commission rate — half of the up to 30 percent rate Apple charges other developers. Apple describes mini apps as “self-contained experiences” built using HTML5 and JavaScript that exist within another app. The format has become popular in China, where apps like the Tencent-owned WeChat have built-in services for ride-hailing, food delivery, payments, and more. Telegram and Discord similarly offer mini apps, while Snapchat and TikTok have also experimented with them. The news of the program comes just hours after Apple reached an agreement with Tencent, allowing it to take a 15 percent commission on purchases from WeChat’s mini apps. Part of the Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple accuses the company of stifling super apps, or apps that offer a range of services (or mini apps) on a single platform. This move may help lessen that …

Google Photos lets iPhone users edit images by describing changes

Google Photos lets iPhone users edit images by describing changes

Google is rolling out several AI updates to its Google Photos app, including iOS support for conversational edits, more accurate facial editing, and new AI tools. This means the “Help me edit” feature that lets you describe how you want Google’s AI to change your photos will be available to iPhone users, following its release on Pixel and other Android devices. “Starting to roll out on iOS in the US, you can simply describe the edits you want using your voice or text and watch Google Photos bring your vision to life,” Google said in its announcement blog. This update also brings the redesigned editor UI for Google Photos to iPhones, making it easy to adjust images with simple gestures and one-tap suggestions. New personalized editing capabilities should make changing something about you or your friends’ faces — such as removing glasses, opening blinked eyes, or inserting a smile — more accurate by referencing images from your private face groups. Google’s Nano Banana AI model is also being integrated into Google Photos, giving users more …

Blackmagic’s free camera app can now stream to YouTube and Twitch

Blackmagic’s free camera app can now stream to YouTube and Twitch

Blackmagic released an update to its free camera app with some new features that streamers and professional broadcasters will appreciate. Both the Android and iOS versions of the Blackmagic Camera app can now stream directly to YouTube, Twitch, and Vimeo, removing the need for third-party apps or additional encoding hardware. You just need to select your platform and enter a secure stream key. While broadcasting, you’ll still have access to the app’s controls so you can adjust settings like exposure and focus on the fly. The update also adds support for SRT: a more modern streaming protocol frequently used by professional broadcasters that’s optimized for networks whose speeds and reliability are less consistent, like the internet. Blackmagic Camera also gains support for custom RTMP and SRT servers for streamers wanting alternatives to the three native platforms now supported. Other improvements to the app include detailed and immediate alerts when an external drive is disconnected to help prevent data loss when working with high-res and high framerate Apple ProRes files the iPhone can’t record internally. And …

Apple Podcasts is generating automatic links and chapters

Apple Podcasts is generating automatic links and chapters

Apple Podcasts will soon include automatically-generated chapters for shows in English and allow creators to add links at specific timestamps in their episodes. Timed links may also be added to episodes automatically whenever creators mention another podcast. Creators can opt-out of both features, and chapters will only be generated when creators don’t add their own. Automatically generated chapters will also be marked as such above an episode’s chapter list. Spotify rolled out a similar auto-generated chapters feature earlier this year. With the timed links feature, creators can “provide links to Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Podcasts, Apple TV, and more” timestamped to appear at specific points in their episodes. The links will pop up in a banner in the Now Playing screen and show up in the transcript and episode details page.
