The 31-year-old’s appointment was confirmed by India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, in the presence of BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, in Mumbai on Saturday. Tilak Varma was appointed the new vice-captain in the shortest format and will lead India in the two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28. Iyer’s first assignment as captain will be the five-match series against England, starting in Chester-le-Street on July 1.
