Ipswich Town Relegated From Premier League After 3-0 Defeat To Newcastle

Ipswich Town Relegated From Premier League After 3-0 Defeat To Newcastle

Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League after slumping to a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle, while Chelsea kept alive their hopes of a top five finish with a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday. Emblematic of the self-inflicted wounds that hampered Ipswich this season, Kieran McKenna’s side had Ben Johnson sent off in the 37th minute for two bookings in quick succession at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak converted a penalty after Jacob Murphy was fouled by Julio Enciso in first half stoppage-time. Dan Burn‘s 56th-minute header doubled Newcastle’s lead and William Osula’s 80th-minute goal left Ipswich with no chance of beating the drop. Third-bottom Ipswich are 15 points behind fourth-bottom West Ham with four games left, ensuring their first season in the top-flight for 22 years will end with an immediate return to the Championship. Out of their depth among the Premier League elite, Ipswich have won just four of their 34 league games. Their relegation alongside Southampton and Leicester, who were both already condemned to the drop, means all three …

Manchester City Stumble, Nottingham Forest Soar In Champions League Chase

Manchester City Stumble, Nottingham Forest Soar In Champions League Chase

Manchester City failed to ease fears of missing out on the Champions League next season after twice blowing the lead to draw 2-2 against Brighton, while third-placed Nottingham Forest thrashed Ipswich 4-2 on Saturday. Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush put City in front, but high-flying Brighton extended their unbeaten run to seven games thanks to Pervis Estupinan’s free-kick and an Abdukodir Khusanov own goal. City boss Pep Guardiola said on Friday that just reaching the Champions League next season would be a “big success” after a difficult season for a side used to lifting the league title. The English champions’ early exit from Europe’s top competition to Real Madrid had at least ensured a full week’s preparation for Guardiola’s men to bounce back from last weekend’s dismal 1-0 defeat at Forest. Marmoush was restored to the starting line-up and proved to be City’s brightest spark going forward. The Egyptian won the penalty from which Haaland opened the scoring with his 29th goal of the season. City’s lead lasted only 10 minutes as Estupinan …

Nottingham Forest Overcome Ipswich Town On Penalties To Reach FA Cup Last 8

Matz Sels’ save edged the shootout 5-4 in Forest’s favour to set up a last eight trip to Brighton.© AFP Nottingham Forest needed penalties to beat Ipswich and book a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday after a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. Jack Taylor was the only man who failed to score from the spot as Matz Sels’ save edged the shootout 5-4 in Forest’s favour to set up a last eight trip to Brighton. The sides are separated by 15 places and 31 points in the Premier League, but with Forest’s priority securing Champions League football next season, Nuno Espirito Santo rested a number of his key players. Ipswich sensed their opportunity and took the lead early in the second half when George Hirst headed in a corner at the back post. Ryan Yates took advantage of some woeful defending to nod in an equaliser 22 minutes from time. An extra 30 minutes of extra-time came and went without a winner despite Nuno sending on top scorer Chris …

Cody Gakpo Stars As Liverpool Rout Ipswich, Arsenal Survive Red Card Drama To Beat Wolves

Cody Gakpo Stars As Liverpool Rout Ipswich, Arsenal Survive Red Card Drama To Beat Wolves

Cody Gakpo struck twice as Premier League leaders Liverpool thrashed Ipswich 4-1 to maintain their six-point lead over Arsenal, who survived Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card to snatch a 1-0 win at Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday. Troubled champions Manchester City recovered from Abdukodir Khusanov’s debut disaster to move into fourth place with a vital 3-1 win against top four rivals Chelsea. At Anfield, Liverpool cruised to their second successive league victory thanks to a first half goal-spree. Dominik Szoboszlai‘s 11th-minute opener fizzed past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton from Ibrahima Konate’s assist. Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the 35th minute with a fierce strike for his 23rd goal in all competitions this term. It was also the Egypt forward’s 100th Premier League goal at Anfield. Gakpo killed off Ipswich before half-time when he bundled home after Walton parried Szoboszlai’s shot in the 44th minute. The Dutch forward netted again in the 66th minute, heading past Walton from Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s cross. Jacob Greaves’ stoppage-time diving header was little consolation for third-bottom …

Cody Gakpo Double Helps Liverpool Thrash Struggling Ipswich In Premier League

Cody Gakpo Double Helps Liverpool Thrash Struggling Ipswich In Premier League

Cody Gakpo scored twice as Liverpool took another step towards the Premier League title with a 4-1 demolition of Ipswich at Anfield on Saturday. Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah were also on target in a dominant performance from the Reds, who remain six points clear of Arsenal having played a game less. Just a second league title in 35 years and a 20th overall to match Manchester United’s English record now seems just a matter of time in Arne Slot’s first season in charge. The Dutchman was able to make five changes from Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Lille that also secured direct passage to the last 16 of the Champions League in a sparkling season for the six-time European champions. By contrast, Ipswich are finding the step up to the Premier League a bridge too far after back-to-back promotions. Kieran McKenna’s men were thrashed 6-0 at home by Manchester City last weekend and could easily have suffered the same margin or more on their first trip to Anfield since 2002. Slot has been …

Raul Jimenez Scores Two Penalties As Fulham Salvage Draw Against Ipswich

Raul Jimenez Scores Two Penalties As Fulham Salvage Draw Against Ipswich

Raul Jimenez scored two penalties as Fulham twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with relegation-threatened Ipswich at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Sam Szmodics put the visitors ahead in the 38th minute, with Jimenez levelling from the spot midway through the second period. Liam Delap restored Ipswich’s lead with another penalty but Jimenez had the final say in stoppage time. The result leaves Ipswich third from bottom of the table after falling agonisingly short of recording two consecutive league wins for the first time this season. Mid-table Fulham enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half but Ipswich broke the deadlock against the run of play with their first chance of note.  Delap surged forward and fed Leif Davis, whose cross was headed onto the bar by overlapping right-back Ben Johnson. After a scramble to clear the danger, Szmodics was on hand to crash the ball off Calvin Bassey and past Bernd Leno. It took until the 69th minute for the Cottagers to get back on level terms. Harry Wilson found …

Big Blow For Wolves, Star Striker Matheus Cunha Handed Two-Match Ban

Big Blow For Wolves, Star Striker Matheus Cunha Handed Two-Match Ban

File image of Matheus Cunha.© X (Twitter) Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was given a two-match ban on Tuesday after his clash with Ipswich backroom staff following his side’s damaging Premier League defeat. Cunha was seen confronting members of Ipswich’s security team in ugly scenes after the final whistle of Wolves’ 2-1 loss to their relegation rivals at Molineux on December 14. He was reported to have elbowed a member of the Ipswich staff before snatching the man’s glasses from his face. Cunha’s team-mate Rayan Ait-Nouri was sent off as tempers flared after Jack Taylor bagged Ipswich’s winner deep into stoppage-time. Cunha was charged by the Football Association and subsequently admitted the charge. An independent commission has suspended the Brazilian for Wolves’ next two matches and handed out an £80,000 ($100,000) fine. The FA said written reasons for the commission’s sanctioning decision would be published in due course. The 25-year-old will miss Wolves’ Premier League game with Nottingham Forest on Monday and the FA Cup third round trip to Bristol City. Cunha has arguably …

“Not Focused On Title Race”: Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Downbeat After Shock Defeat To Ipswich

“Not Focused On Title Race”: Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Downbeat After Shock Defeat To Ipswich

Enzo Maresca admitted Chelsea should not think about challenging for the Premier League title after lowly Ipswich beat the Blues 2-0 at Portman Road on Monday. Maresca’s side were rocked by Liam Delap’s early penalty and a second-half goal from former Chelsea winger Omari Hutchinson. Chelsea’s second successive defeat after their Boxing Day loss against Fulham left them without a win in their last three matches. The west Londoners had emerged as surprise title contenders after an eight-match winning run in all competitions. But Maresca had insisted throughout that spell that Chelsea’s inexperienced squad do not have what it takes to win the title in his first season after arriving from Leicester. And the Italian’s prediction looks spot on after a shock result in Suffolk that leaves Chelsea in fourth place, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. “We focus game by game. We are not focused on title race or those things,” Maresca said. “It was a strange game. We had many chances but we could do many …

Diogo Jota Rescues 10-Man Liverpool In Fulham Draw, Arsenal Frustrated

Diogo Jota Rescues 10-Man Liverpool In Fulham Draw, Arsenal Frustrated

Diogo Jota rescued Liverpool as the Premier League leaders recovered from Andy Robertson’s early red card to snatch a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Arsenal’s title challenge was dented by a goalless stalemate against Everton on Saturday. With just four minutes left at Anfield, Arne Slot’s side were in danger of losing for just the second time in 15 top-flight games this season. But Jota grabbed a valuable equaliser as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches since a loss to Nottingham Forest in September. With last weekend’s Merseyside derby at Everton postponed by severe weather, Liverpool have now gone two league games without a win following their 3-3 draw at Newcastle. The Reds sit five points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who can close the gap with a win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Liverpool were rocked in the 11th minute as Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira met Antonee Robinson’s cross with an agile volley that deflected in off Robertson. The Reds suffered another blow when Scotland left-back …

Ruud Van Nistelrooy Off To Winning Start At Leicester City, Crystal Palace Beat Ipswich Town

Ruud Van Nistelrooy Off To Winning Start At Leicester City, Crystal Palace Beat Ipswich Town

Ruud van Nistelrooy savoured his first match in charge of Leicester with a 3-1 Premier League win over West Ham, while Crystal Palace edged Ipswich 1-0 on Tuesday. Jamie Vardy, Bilal El Khannouss and Patson Daka got the goals as Van Nistelrooy enjoyed a dream start to his new role shortly after his departure from Manchester United. “On a long-term basis we know the performances need to get better. But the spirit and how we want to do things we saw today because, if not, the Premier League is too brutal,” said Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman said he had been “astonished” by the number of offers he received after a four-game spell as interim United boss, which included two wins over Leicester. A lethal finisher in his playing days, Van Nistelrooy watched on approvingly as Vardy opened the scoring after just 99 seconds at the King Power. The 37-year-old had initially been flagged offside, but a VAR review showed he was clearly on for his fifth goal of the season. Defeat ramps up …
