We have a significant number of Indian students studying in Ireland, typically postgraduates. But we are looking at the undergraduate options as well,” said James Lawless, Ireland’s Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, who is currently in India on an official visit. In an interview with The Hindu, he spoke on plans to collaborate with educational institutions. Chennai was his third stop on the trip, which included New Delhi and Mumbai. The Irish Film and Television Awards honored Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy with the Best Lead Actor category for the second time in a row. Last year, the actor was honored with the award for performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. This year, he bagged the event’s biggest award for his role in Small Things Like These. It’s an Indie historical drama based on Claire Keegan’s eponymous 2021 novel. The story revolves around a coal merchant, played by Murphy, who discovers “disturbing secrets kept by the local convent and uncovers shocking truths of his own,” as per the synopsis. The movie also won Best Film at the 2025 IFTAs. Demi Moore won the Best Actress award in the international category for her performance in the body horror The Substance, while Ralph Fiennes won the same award in the male category for his role thriller-mystery in Conclave. Irish boxer John Cooney has died a week after being taken into intensive care following his Celtic super-featherweight title defeat to Nathan Howells in Belfast. The death of the 28-year-old Cooney was announced on Saturday in a statement published by his promoter Mark Dunlop on behalf of the Cooney family and his fiancee Emmaleen. “After a week of battling for his life John Cooney has sadly passed away,” the statement said. “He was a much loved son, brother and partner and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John the Kid’ Cooney.” Cooney’s fight with Howells was stopped in the ninth round at Ulster Hall. Cooney subsequently underwent surgery after it was discovered he had an intracranial hemorrhage. “Mr. and Mrs. Cooney and his fiancee Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital who have worked tirelessly to save John’s life and for everyone who has sent messages of support and prayers,” the statement said. Zimbabwe Cricket on Friday announced that it will be hosting Ireland in an all-format series after the ongoing one against Afghanistan ends. Zimbabwe will host back-to-back tours, which their managing director Givemore Makoni believes is ‘a testament to our commitment’ of giving the players regular cricket at the International level.
