Kamaljeet overcomes hardship to realise Asian Games dream after injury setback

Asian Games-bound men’s air pistol shooter Kamaljeet and his family endured financial strain during the early stages of his professional career, but those sacrifices have finally helped him break into the elite level. Now, the 22-year-old is all set to realise his dream of competing at the continental showpiece. Kamaljeet initially made his mark as a 50m marksman, winning the Junior World Championship gold in the event in Changwon in 2023. He further cemented his place in the senior ranks by claiming an individual silver medal at the Asian Championships in New Delhi earlier this year. However, it was in the highly competitive 10m air pistol event that Kamaljeet truly cut his teeth. Backed by a string of strong performances on the domestic circuit, he earned a place in India’s national squad for next month’s Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. “We are a middle-class family, but my parents never let me quit shooting. I had to manage my own expenses for course fees and international matches early on, and there were times I thought I wouldn’t continue …

How Neeru Dhanda beat ‘bib jinx’ to win India’s first women’s trap gold

When Neeru Dhanda lined up for the women’s trap final at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy, she had already accomplished one of her goals. Her aim was to earn a higher bib number than she had in her previous two finals at the ISSF World Cups. On Saturday, the Naib Subedar from Jind, Haryana, did much more than that when she became the first Indian woman to win an individual gold medal in the women’s trap event at the World Cup. “In the last two World Cups, I missed out on a medal because of the bib number rule. Every time I got a smaller bib number. Last time too, I finished fourth. This time, I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. No excuses,” Neeru told The Bridge from Italy on Sunday. “My coach was also very excited because I topped the qualification and then performed well in the final despite competing against Olympic medallists and world champions,” she added. Neeru topped the qualification with 121 out of a possible 125 …
