How an Italian legend has left a mark on a World Cup without Italy with modified national anthem routine

3 min readUpdated: Jun 12, 2026 11:31 AM IST The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway and while some of the sport’s biggest names would be putting their bodies on the line to win football’s most covetted trophy, one of the most succesfull teams in the tournament is sitting out yet again, with a fair dose of existential dread hovering over them. This is the third consecutive men’s World Cup to not feature Italy, a rather unthinkable scenario considering they are the joint second most successful team in the history of the tournament, just one behind Brazil’s record of five titles. However, there is a contribution from an Italian great that will be seen right at the beginning of matches throughout this tournament, and possibly after that as well in senior football. Regular football watchers would’ve noticed something different about the pre-match routine before the opening game of the tournament between Mexico and South Africa, and later between South Korea and Czechia. When the time came for the national anthems to be played, the full …

(Photo by Jack GUEZ / AFP) (AFP) The source, who asked not to be named, confirmed earlier reports by Italian news agencies and said Ben-Gvir was being investigated on suspicion of torture and kidnapping of Italian citizens who were among the activists. If the probe determines charges are warranted, prosecutors could lodge a formal request for trial. In response to the Italian investigation, Ben-Gvir said in a statement: “I will not shy away from one investigation or another and will continue to stand proudly alongside our fighters.” Israel and Ben-Gvir have faced mounting international criticism after the minister in late May released a video showing detained …

The 1994 legend no missed penalty could erase

5 min readJun 2, 2026 09:54 PM IST The popstar knew before the pundits did. Madonna, sporting her own scrunched power-high ponytail and a No 15 Italy jersey, had already made her call on Roberto Baggio. On her Blonde Ambition Tour in Rome, just two days after the 1990 World Cup, she had spoken proper football: “That goal against Czechoslovakia was marvellous.” Football snobs scoffed when she added, “I didn’t know his name then, but that goal and his big green eyes conquered me.” By 1994, she had anointed him the “Cutest.” The rest of the world was catching up. The footballing flock called him the Divine Ponytail – Il Divin Codino – after he embraced Nichiren Buddhism in 1985 following a career-threatening knee injury in Campania so severe he was told he might not walk normally again. The faith he found in recovery was not incidental – it became the stillness you could see in him under pressure, the composure that looked almost unreasonable given the moments he was asked to produce it in. …

Game of the Century: How Italy and West Germany turned a World Cup semi-final into football’s greatest drama

Game of the Century: How Italy and West Germany turned a World Cup semi-final into football’s greatest drama

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is around the corner, and, as in the previous few editions, we can expect a few humdingers. The tournament has repeatedly delivered thrillers, and some matches have even turned into goal-fests. Some games are remembered for their quality, while others are known for their significance. But only a few contests have managed to transcend both to script their place in the sport’s folklore. One such occasion came on June 17, 1970, under the floodlights of Mexico’s Azteca Stadium, where Italy and West Germany went toe-to-toe, and the result was so extraordinary that it became known as the Game of the Century. Italy defeated West Germany in the 1970 FIFA World Cup semi-final. (Football History Pics -X) On paper, it was a World Cup semi-final. However, in reality, it became something far greater. The players from both teams battled fatigue, courage, and desperation to create one of the sport’s most unforgettable spectacles. For 90 minutes, the match seemed relatively straightforward. Italy, the defending champions, took an early lead through Roberto Boninsegna …

In a post on X, Gandhi contrasted the Prime Minister’s high-profile diplomatic visit to Italy with the growing financial distress of marginalised communities at home. He alleged that while key demographics, including farmers, youth, women, labourers, and small business owners, are struggling to survive, the top leadership remains engrossed in public relations exercises.
