Shabana Azmi Says Item Songs Make Her Uncomfortable

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has shared her thoughts on the prevalence of item songs in Bollywood, saying that they often make her uncomfortable due to the way women are portrayed and how suggestive lyrics have become normalised in popular culture. Speaking in a recent interaction, Azmi pointed out that such songs are widely enjoyed, but their deeper implications are rarely discussed. Referring to the popular track “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” from the 1993 film Khal Nayak, Azmi noted that the song continues to be sung widely, even by children. She said this is what particularly troubles her, as many young people repeat the lyrics without fully understanding their meaning. According to the actor, this reflects how certain forms of entertainment become so embedded in everyday culture that people stop questioning what they are actually saying or representing. Azmi also highlighted how item numbers often rely heavily on the “male gaze,” where women are presented primarily as objects of visual attraction. She explained that such portrayals can strip female characters of agency and reduce them …

(PTI Photo)(PTI03_03_2026_000024B) (PTI) What Shabana said Talking about item numbers, Shabana said, “Cinema is defined by the image. So when you have disconnected images, like for example, a heaving bosom, or shaking navel, you cut them into fragments and how the camera moves around the body is what decides what the intention of the director is. I feel in an item number, a …

For ‘Messi of Chess’ Faustino Oro, youngest GM landmark a mere checklist item on his way to bigger things

For ‘Messi of Chess’ Faustino Oro, youngest GM landmark a mere checklist item on his way to bigger things

In four days from now, a 12-year-old boy from Argentina will begin his final attempt at defying time and going where no one has ever been in chess history. Faustino Oro, fondly nicknamed the ‘Messi of Chess’ for his Argentinian roots and his mercurial rise at a young age, is just one norm away from being the world’s youngest grandmaster. None of the sport’s greatest practitioners – Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer – were this young when they became GMs. Carlsen was closest at 13, while Fischer was 15 and Kasparov 17 when they became grandmasters. D Gukesh, the youngest world champion in chess history, ran full pelt towards achieving the record. And missed by 17 days. The record is currently held by Indian-origin American GM Abhimanyu Mishra, who was 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days old when he became a grandmaster in 2021, thus lowering Sergey Karjakin’s record — which the Russian had held for 19 years — by more than two months. Oro’s final shot at making history as the …

O`Romeo: Violent visuals chopped, `item` replaced with `kumari` by CBFC

While Shahid Kapoor’s latest film O`Romeo gears up for release, the film has cleared the censorship process with an ‘A’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Helmed by Vishal Bhardwaj, it marks Shahid`s fourth collaboration with the filmmaker. The film cleared certification on February 11, only after the mandated changes and reductions were made. O`Romeo changes According to a Bollywood Hungama report, the censor board asked the film’s makers to modify several dialogues and scenes before approving the film. The word ‘item’ was allegedly replaced with ‘kumari’. In some of the other scenes, a word was reportedly muted while an ‘inappropriate’ term was deleted. These changes were implemented to follow the certification guidelines. Notably, CBFC did not ask for any cuts to the romantic or intimate scenes in the film. Additionally, the film’s violent content was given special attention. One close-up shot showing throat-cutting visuals was reportedly reduced by 20 per cent, which was around three seconds of footage being chopped. Besides, the board also asked for additional cuts, including two seconds …

Malaika Arora says she feels empowered doing item songs at 52: ‘They make me feel amazing; why would I be apologetic?’ | Bollywood News

Actor Malaika Arora has long been associated with giving scintillating performances in Bollywood songs and has been part of some of the most beloved ‘item songs’ of the past 20 years. While her performance has garnered a lot of positive reaction, the actor has often faced trolling for it as well.  Malaika featured in two major music videos last year — one was for the Yo Yo Honey Singh song ‘Chillgum’, and the other was the song ‘Poison Baby’ from the Aditya Sarpotdar film Thamma. The music video also included Rashmika Mandanna, the female lead of the film. In a recent interview, she addressed this phenomenon and said that she doesn’t see any reason for not accepting this ‘image’ of her and owning what she is doing with conviction. The actor and entrepreneur appeared on The Namrata Zakaria Show on YouTube, where she discussed her career, personal life and everything in between. When asked about whether she now owns the image that is associated with her and the performances, she said, “Why not? Why do …

Women’s HIL: Navneet Kaur checks off one item pre-season to-do list as SG Pipers start season with win over Ranchi Royals | Hockey News

Heading into the second edition of Women’s Hockey India League, Navneet Kaur’s pre-season hope was to play more attacking hockey, combine better with her teammates, and contribute more from set pieces. “I don’t have a number in mind for the number of goals,” she had said to The Indian Express. “But I do want to contribute more. I want to focus on our Penalty Corner attack because it is something I did well in the recent Asia Cup.” And that is exactly what the SG Pipers captain did, breaking the deadlock against Ranchi Royals and eventually leading her side to a 2-0 win on the opening night in Ranchi. Despite Royals having the better of the early exchanges, it was the Pipers who got close to opening the scoring. A high ball, caused by Ranchi losing possession deep in their territory, bounced in front of Navneet. The captain smartly batted it down almost like a tennis forehand, into the circle. Bichu Devi initially let the ball through because the shot came from outside the circle …

MoSPI to release item weights in new CPI series before inflation data to help forecasters | Business News

The Statistics Ministry will make public the weights of each item that will be part of the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket before the first retail inflation data is released on February 12. “Economists have asked for the weights to be provided before the inflation number comes, so that they can make their forecasts. So, the item weights will be released a week or so in advance,” a source said on the condition of anonymity. A second person aware of the matter said the weights of each item had been finalised apart from a few possible minor adjustments and were likely to be made public in the first week of February 2026. The weights of various items in the CPI basket are key to how the headline inflation rate moves as that is the weighted average of the year-on-year change in price of each item. For instance, ‘gold’ and ‘silver’ together account for just 1.19 per cent of the CPI at present, but even this small weight has been more than enough for the …

The song is a refreshing new take on Bollywood’s long-standing idea of romance on screen, bringing a playful and modern twist to the dance number. After Bhaag DK Bose, a quirky Bollywood number from Delhi Belly which became a massive success, Banda Tere Liye is soon to join the list of chartbusters. Traditionally, Hindi cinema has often showcased women performing songs and dance numbers to woo their leading men but Banda Tere Liye has changed the trend. Vir Das turns dancer for Banda Tere Liye For the first time in mainstream Bollywood, the spotlight is on the male lead and he is seen wooing and performing wholeheartedly for his lady love, while the woman sits back and watches him perform.
