His wife had sought permission for the extraction of her husband’s sperm, so that she could proceed with in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. In this context, the union budget 2026-27 announced a significant push for the biopharma and pharmaceutical sector. The “Biopharma SHAKTI” programme, announced with a total outlay of 10,000 crores over a period of 5 years, is an example.  The programme envisions transforming India into a global biomanufacturing hub through strengthened research programmes by establishing three new National Institutes for Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPERs). The Badlapur police arrested Dr Amol Patil, director of Malti IVF Centre in Thane, on Tuesday night, in connection with the alleged illegal human egg extraction and surrogacy racket. Dr Patil has been charged with operating an unauthorised IVF centre in Thane, for conducting illegal surrogacy procedures and selling human eggs. Police are also investigating his and the centre’s possible involvement in international surrogacy and human egg trafficking. Malti IVF Centre is registered in Nashik. The woman, married for seven years, approached the infertility outpatient department at Gandhi Hospital in February last year after several unsuccessful intrauterine insemination (IUI) attempts elsewhere. Following a detailed infertility work-up, doctors initiated medical ovulation induction. As there was no adequate response, she was taken up for IVF. She was monitored throughout the antenatal period and was admitted with preterm onset of labour, following which an emergency lower-segment caesarean section was performed on February 7. On December 9, a court in Udaipur ordered filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari, to seven days` police prison for an alleged Rs 30 crore fraud case. On Tuesday, the couple`s lawyer requested that interim bail be granted for medical reasons. However, the court placed them in judicial custody. According to Advocate Manzoor Hussain, the accused`s lawyer filed an application for interim bail, urging that it be granted on medical grounds. If temporary bail is granted before the court session concludes, both individuals may be released for a brief period to undergo medical treatment. If the latest reports are to be believed, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has been arrested in an alleged fraud case worth Rs 30 crore. This comes after a lookout notice was earlier issued against filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, his wife Shwetambari Bhatt, and six other individuals in a fraud case by a renowned IVF doctor.  Vikram Bhatt arrested According to reports, the arrest was carried out in a joint operation by the Rajasthan Police and Mumbai Police at his sister‑in‑law’s residence. Following his arrest, the Rajasthan Police are now expected to seek a transit remand from the Bandra Court to transfer Bhatt to Udaipur. Seven days prior to the arrest, Udaipur Police had allegedly issued a lookout notice against Vikram Bhatt, his wife Shwetambari Bhatt, and six other individuals accused of defrauding Dr  Ajay Murdia, founder of the Indira Group of Companies.
